Muffler Bypass Story...
Muffler Bypass Story...
So this is my first post.
Ive been driving my C2 Cab for about a year now and wanted to start some DIY "tinkering". I have gone through a bunch of 6speed posts and thought Id give a few things a try. I bought some knockoff bypass pipes on ebay for a few bucks and after 3 trips to pepboys, I thought I had been misled by the seller and would just pay the $550 for the fabspeed pipes. I stumbled across the elbow pipe (turns out it was the same one that people suggested using as a inexpensive way to test your tolerance to the sound of the bypass pipes).
Bought the two elbow pipes and grabbed my hacksaw to cut the ends off so they didnt stick out too far...all I had to do was put them in the clamp and tighten it down. Seemed simple enough...except I got a call from my dentist who wanted me there early. I kneeled down and tightened the nuts real quick and fired her up. Quite a bit louder than I expected. And after I hit 90mph I heard a exhaust cough and then it opened up really loud...also the elbow pipes dissapeared. Guess I didnt tighten them down enough.
All my buddies loved the new sound and except in the neighborhoods, I loved it too. Of course I pull up to a stop light and see the cop a few cars back, think nothing of it when I gave it a little extra to put some distance between us. He quickly closed the gap and lit me up. Wound up writing me a ticket for "Driving a motor vehicle in a mannor intended to cause excessive noise". Who is he to say I intended to cause excessive noise. I could have lit up the tires or given him a real reason to pull me, but whatever. I havent made the desicion about the fabspeed pipes yet.
$550 is a lot to spend for the right to be pulled over more than usual.

I have a prototype bypass pipe on my car right now and it is the shape of the tip that helps control some of the sound. I did have the Fabspeed pipes on my car but I found that fitment wasn't too great and the sound was excessively loud. The prototype I have now sounds great and is not nearly as loud as the Fabspeed. More to come in a few weeks.
T-shak,
Nice first post! I run Cat-bypass and by themselves are louder. I'd like to hear a muff-bypass.
BTW, I'm the regions AutoX chair, we have a very active club. Check us out at www.pcachs.org
We are running an AUtoX school and the State Police training track! Should be fun! Hope to see you around!
