I commute quite a bit with it, haven't tracked or auto crossed it, so I'm sure that helps. However, they've been making road noise like crazy for the past 2 or 3K miles, I've just been lazy

I'm going tomorrow to the local tire place and I'm going to get the RE050's. I've heard lots of good things about them

There is not such thing as a C2S. The 996 only came in:
C2
C2 cab
C4
C4S
C4 cab
C4S cab (maybe, not sure)
Targa
Turbo
Turbo cab
Turbo S (maybe, not sure)
GT2
GT3
...(but that's all)

the 2's and the 4's drive differently, see what you like.

My preference was for the C2, lightest of the bunch

Well sorta... The X51 engine option on the C2/C4/C4S was refered to as the S engine in the Engine Serial Number and in the manual somewhere if I recall both correctly.

It's just that when the 997 came out Porsche started using the 'S' like the boxster model line (and really old 911s in the 70's) to denote a bigger engine, not a higher output version.

Before then (other than turbo models) the S refered to the turbo look for both the 993 and 996 models.

I should also mention an X51 996 makes almost as much HP as a 997 C2S. So if you could find a 2004 Anniversary edition or something else with the higher output engine you should. Just look for a manual transmission with a center radiator(all automatics have a transmission cooler there) as a starting point. most dealers won't know what they have and may let the car go for the price of a base engine.

a local dealer has an '03 c2 with the x51 package and some kind of sport exhaust. the thing runs like a scalded cat! pulls like a 996tt in the lower gears. also has the full gt3 look.
at $54,000 the car is priced like any other 996 with 20k miles.

i was saving this, my 1st post, for when i finally get my own 996, but couldn't help but chime in.
