StrtSwpr996 your car sounds like it's brand new! Do you have pics you can post and share? I did locate a car, but am looking into the details. We'll see what happens.

Does anyone know what the 996's are going for on dealer trade in? Details of mine is '00MY, 6-speed, 996 C2. Tons of factory upgrades (that unfortunately don't mean squat in trade in value / got suckered by Porsche). Currently 34K miles, no damage, fair to excellent condition.
I will try to take some pictures of it this weekend.

However, as precise and wonderful it is to drive a 996, I have also been behind the wheel of a 355. Let me tell you...that experience never leaves your senses. The sound alone is almost worth the price of admission. Both are razor sharp cars in my book, though the 355 may be a little more twitchy at the limits and may feel a bit more fragile compared to the rock solid Porsche.

I guess it's also the fact that the 355 have came down in price that makes them so "obtainable" these days that it's what's tempting me.
I mean...look at this thing!!

Now thats a Perfect 355, enjoy it in good health!

I'm in the middle of this exact same transaction. My 996 leaves me in a few months and I plan to replace it with a 355. I've loved Porsches my whole life and dreamed of the day I could get one. Got it; love it. Want a 997. There will always be an empty parking space in my heart where a 911 belongs, but the call of the wild 355 has got me hooked for now.

I've been considering this and researching it for about a year now. F355 is not a daily driver. Period. Nevermind what they say on Fchat. It is not as solid and reliable as a Porsche. Maintenance will eat you alive if you are not committed to the car (or committed because of the car). Every 3-5 years or 30k, plan to drop $7500-10k in maintenance (per Eugenio's price list above). Good news is that it probably won't depreciate like a Porsche, that frankly, has entered Jeep territory by losing 15% per year. So TCO is about the same or a little less with a well cared for <4k mile/year 355 than a 911 - daily driven or not. Plus, it takes weeks not hours to service a Ferrari.

Tips I've learned: 1) Buy a '99 or one that has the valve guides replaced. Otherwise, plan on spending an extra $10-12k to do that down the road. 2) Call your insurance guy. I'm "grandfathered" so I can add it to my policy and its actually cheaper than the 996! But if I was a new customer, they would not accept me with the Ferrari. 3) Service it properly and drive the hell out of it and it will love you back.

Summary, as one 'chatter put it:
The Porsche is the woman you want to marry, while the Ferrari is the woman you want to have an affair with.

Good luck.

That being said...the pcar must just be SOOO much easier to own and romp on...but...go with your HEART on this one if its a weekend car...

Funny, I plan to get a ferrari relatively soon, maybe this year or next. I will keep my 996, but I've dreamed of owning a ferrari ever since I was a kid living in italy. Seems like I'll finally be able to do it. I'm seriously looking at 355's and a friend is going to let me drive his in a few weeks. I can't wait!

I would love to own a 355, but did you see the price of service. Dayum! 400 miles per year to keep the resale up? Hell, I run that many miles.

yeah the 355 service price is pretty insane, you have to factor that up front in your budget. Its mostly because of that that I keep waffling between getting a 328 or 348 and a 355. 348 is most bang for buck and quite reliable, 328 prices are rising, so if you only drive say 3-4K miles/year, over 3-4 years, you would probably break even if you upgraded.

Still love my 996 though!

If you have the $$$ and can handle maintenance cost, go for it. Red is the only Ferrari color that hold value up well. That's my 2 cents.

Got one of those. Great car. Just want to add an 355 to the garage.

I think I'm gonna put my 996 up for sale in the for sale section and see how it does there. I have some parts on the car I may be willing to part out such as Gemballa rear wing, PSS9, Porsche Sport Exhaust, Gemballa 18" 3 pc wheel. Have a look or spread the word.

i personally would go with the f335 if you have the means for up keep. Its been one of my favorite ferraris besides the f40, and the looks and sound alone are godly....

good luck with whatever route you take.....
