Hi. The RMS thing makes me worry about getting a used MY 99 carrera.

Do you think MY 00 or later carreras have the RMS problem too? Like what percentage of the cars get the RMS thing in 99, 00, and so on?

Also, so which year they fix the rattling problem?

O, one more thing, if the car is still under warranty, does that include free mainteance like the BMW and Benz have?

Thanks.

When I was doing my research I found that the RMS is mostly early 99's BUT has been reported in newer cars as well.

SO what are you looking for? I may be selling my 99 Black/Black with full Aero kit. Had its RMS done 3k ago so you should not have any issues.

Mail me at twasmer@comcast.net as I might make a trade real soon.

i have a 2000 996 that i have had for almost 3 years. and my engine is as dry as the desert. no leaks. i do suggest getting at least a 2000 so it's a drive by wire instead of a cable system.

no free mainteance. no free anything...

Here's a poll done on rennlist:

no rms leak 52 59.77%

rms leak in first 2000 mi 0 0%

rms leak in first 5000 mi 2 2.30%

rms leak in first 10000 mi 8 9.20%

rms leak in first 15000 mi 5 5.75%

rms leak in first 20000 mi 2 2.30%

rms leak in first 25000 mi 7 8.05%

rms leak after 30000 mi 3 3.45%

more than 1 rms leak 5 5.75%

rms leak required engine replacement 3 3.45%

Every year has the RMS issue.
And they all tend to rattle a bit.

I don't think that Porsche ever offered free maintenance, just road side assistance, but maint. intervals are quite far apart.

If you are going for a 99, try to get a late model version. There were some MY98 (remember it was out in Europe first) that came in as early 99 models. They had all kinds of issues, though by now they are probably fixed. Also the interiors were different.

As far as RMS, I think Eric's post about covered it. Can happen anytime, to any model year 996, its a flaw with the M96 engine design.
