996 ('03) - Oil Consumption....

We joined the Porsche world last year with a '03 996 C4 Cab; absolutely love the car and have put 15K miles on it (got a hard top and used it throughout an IL winter).

The Porsche dealer where we service the car put in Mobil 1 0W-40 and I have been using it ever since (oil change every 7k miles). My problem is that I have to add a quart every 500-600 miles (I keep track of my oil consumption and it has remained regular).

The RMS and bank #1 (L) head gasket were replaced under warranty, and there are no obvious leaks. We drive the car fairly hard, and the mechanics at the dealer say this is normal consumption, but it seems at times like I am running a lawnmower rather than a sports car.

What do you guys think? Is this normal consumption? Are there any problems with this rate of consumption? What are my options if this is a problem?

Thanks in advance.

Adam

thats supposed to be within spec of the car... Lots of people have complained about this but, Porsche sez this is normal. Try changing the oil every 3000 and see if that doesnt improve the consumption.

I always get the same oil level when I check my oil. I'm expecting some oil loss after all that I've read, but no, just happens that my car does not seem to consume any oil. Must be a good thing...

Maximum oil usage should not exceed 1 QT per 600 miles. I went thru that scenario too and I started driving it hard and it slowed it up. I had the dealer verify and gage the leakage amount every week until I hit 600 miles and it was barely passable.

My '03 needed only about a quart over 6k miles (12 mos).
