*newbie* asking for advice.....

Hello to all my fellow 6speeders. I'm new to this site and a new porsche owner as well. I was wonding if I can ask some of you guys for your opinion. I'm looking to upgrade my exhaust and intake systems on my 99' C2 that I just bought. I've been reading some of the posts and I see a lot of ppl talking about fabspeed, PSE (porsche sports exhaust? i think), techart, RUF. What's the performance like on the PSE? I have an oppertunity to get for $1000. Some ppl have told me that it doesn't add any HP and others told me it does. I'm looking for an exhaust system that has good performance and still sounds like a porsche. I live in san francisco, CA so it has to be smog friendly.

I also wanted to know if I get a full exhaust system (headers, sports cats, mufflers) with intake, will I need to upgrade my computer as well or can I leave it stock.

You will LOVE the sound of the PSE. Will it make the car perform better? I imagine it will, but I'd do it just for the sound alone.

I have the fabspeed exhaust (not the bypass pipes) and its a pretty deep rumbling growl that extends to a loud roar at WOT. I guess it depends on how you like the car to sound (high or low pitch) so I would see if I can checkout someone local who has the PSE before adding it to be sure. You can also find decent soundclips of other exhausts like the fabspeed on the net. (its how I made my decision to go with it over the others) In the end, I don't think you can go wrong because all of them will make your heartrate increase the higher you get into the RPMs. Good Luck!

PSE no power gain. Fabspeed supposed 1 or 2 hp. Your not going to get much from a muffler. Fabspeed is usually what I recommend but the PSE at $1000 sounds like a good deal.

Changing your exhaust system does nto require a new ecu but it would help to get teh most out of it. Great looking 996 by the way! Welcome to 6speed!!!!

Just do it for the sound for the exhaust mods,
You will be disappointed if you expect any performance gains at all.

If you want better response get a GIAC flash, this will tie all the mods together, get a high flow filter with your stock intake.

Exhaust and intake give minimal hp increase, the most it gives is just a better sound. Intake plenum and a bigger throttle body is the key in getting more power. So what if you have a better flowing exhaust, it is still going to bottle neck before it gets to the engine. Stock box by far has the best design in getting as much cold air into the engine, I have the F&N, didnt feel any power increase till i did the plenum and bigger throttle body.

As for the other end of the engine, cats do the most in terms of HP, go with the Cargraphic cats, the quality of the cats are impecable.

With all that more air coming in, you need to find away to get it out, so cats do the biggest difference, but still go with better flowing headers and mufflers too.

Finally, go with a good ecu reprograming, something that you can tune on your own as well, down to what mods you have.

Welcome to 6speed!

My $.02. I have the PSE exhaust. Sounds great, makes no more power. With a '99 you can make a little more power with I/H/E and a DME flash, but now you are about $4K deep and only made an extra 6-8% in HP. If you do cats phlenem and TB you might eek out a bit more, but at what cost? $3K more? I would do the exhaust, PSE is a deal at that price, just for the beautiful sound. The other stuff is really your call. I suggest you just enjoy the car with it's stock HP for awhile and get used to driving it. In my opinion the suspension needs more attention than the engine. There are plenty of choices there. Then take some money and get some track days in.

I see that you are in San Francisco, if you ever get a wildhair to drive down to San Jose for a Santa Row meet on a Saturday send me a PM. I can meet you and you can check out my PSE.

Andy

Oh one more thing, post some pics of your new ride!

Thanks for you advice andy. But what is I/H/E and DME flash? I'm thinking it's some kind of computer mod? I'll PM you when I think my car is ready to come to santana row. There is something wrong with the site. It won't let me upload pics. I have a pic on my original post, but I'll post more when it lets.

I say go to sharkwerks (vendor on right) and listen to some of their customers cars. You really need to hear this kind of stuff in person.

Aloha

I/H/E = Intake, Header, Exhaust
DME=ECU = Engine Control Unit (the brain or computer of your car)

I don't remember the exact words that DME stand for.

We say FLASH because we no longer need to replace a chip in the ECU or "chip" a car, we simply re-code the flash memory in the computer with new software, called "flashing".

Thanks to all of you for your advice. It sounds like I can't really go wrong as long as I stick with some of the more popular brands and besides, I can always go to shark werks. They sound like a bunch of cool ppl to deal with.
