Question New car service

When is the recommended time to go in for service? Just got out of break in and I am wondering when it needs an oil change.

Thanks,
Vik

Some folks do a first oil change at 7500 miles. While the merits of a 7500 mile oil change can be debated till the cows come home, most evidence points to it being unnecessary at that low a mileage. Since your dealer is in business to take your money, they will probably recommend it.

Porsche does not recommend the first oil and filter change until 15,000 miles or 1 year, which ever comes first.

However if your RMS starts leaking at about 7500 miles, you will get a free oil change then

I did my first oil and filter at 15K, and have not had any problems. If you DIY, you can get Mobil1 0-40 for $3.99 (9 qts) at Wallmart or most autoparts places, and the filter and a new drain plug washer is about $13. The most expensive item for the 15K is the cabin pollen filter at $31.

The total materials costs for a 15K service is about $80. I think that most dealers gouge for an additional $220 to $420 for the labor. (keep in mind that if anything is broken on your new car, it is under warranty, and labor to find that is charged to Porsche).

Do you plan on changing your own oil?

I am one of those that has bought into the theory that the first oil change being way before the factory recommendations. Maybe because of Motorcycle experience I guess...

Anyway I had mine done at about 1,000 miles.

Maybe not needed, but I sleep better.

Having said that I am sure the factory does knows what they are talking about.

Funny you should mention a rear main seal leak and oil change at 7500mi. I bought a slightly used 996 cab with 5000mi on the clock and when I took it in for the initial service at about 8000mi. (nearest dealer is 100mi. away you see) they said I had a leaky rear main seal. The engine was completely serviced with no hassles and completely covered under warranty. They even gave my wife a 2003 Boxter as a loaner (150mi. on odo.) since the work was going to take more than a day. Sun Motors in Harrisburg, PA is a new dealer and did excellent service. They even washed my car and drove it here to me (again 100+mi.) I'd highly recommend these guys.

Changed oil after first 1,000 miles, after that will depend on the type of use you do whether its strictly street or also track use.
