brake fluid flush every 2 years

Picked up my car yesterday from the workshop for oil change, filter etc... and was told that I need a brake fluid flush in 2months, is this really necessary ? fluid still looks clean as day 1 and no problems with stopping power (PCCB).

2008 997 GT2
Mileage 6000 miles (no track days, no racing or abuse)

You're smart if you follow his instructions on this one. Not only does brake fluid absorb water, which lowers it's effectiveness, but the flush will keep the brake lines clear and free of corrosion by keeping fresh fluid in them. Sure you could go longer on the original fluid, but why chance the brakes on a car with the high speed potential of the turbo.

I flush mine every 6 months, more frequent if I'm tracking the car a lot. I like the GS610 or the ATE blue/gold fluid.

You will not be able to determine the quality of your brake fluid by looking at it. If you track your car (at all) you will want to flush your brake fluid at least once if not twice a season.

Whether or not water, temperature breakdown, or contamination causes brake fluid wear is open to debate. Regardless, it needs to be changed more frequently if you do any high speed driving.

farfinator is infamous around these parts
2 months, 6K miles seems a bit excessive for this service w/ no track activity.
And lets face it, it is extremely unlikely it was little more than a quick bleed to freshen the pedal and not not an actual "flush" of all the fluid from the lines and reservoir. I'd be suspect. What were you charged?

+1 on minimally every 2 years, preferably every year and more frequently w/ track use.

I do my own. Cost of fluid only. And yes, I get a return of all the fluid.

Don't be cheap on this one! A brake fluid flush every two years is a good thing. Cost me $276 total at my local Porsche dealer

BBWYU,

Glad you are so thorough, but the response was to SRW's concern about getting ripped off. To that, I suggest he probably was a bit taken advantage of in that the service at 2 months and 6k miles was IMHO both excessive and quite likely not fully executed (Since at this interval there is virtually no cause to flush the lines, resevoir etc) and I was curious how much his dealer charged him for the farce. If it was 0.5hr, that would suggest little more than cracking the bleeders. If it was more like 1.5hrs, then its possible a full flush was actually performed.

+1 on Castrol SRF or Endless

OP wrote service is *IN* 2 months, not ***at*** 2 months. Car in question is 2008 MY and if it is 2 years old in 2 months, recommended service is not out of line.
