Cargraphic Race Exhaust Self Install
Cargraphic Race Exhaust Self Install
Hello all 6speeders!
This is my first official thread here on the forum. My name is John and I purchased a white 2007 997 TT with techart type I full kit and 20" wheels back in December 2009. This was an impulse buy and what an awesome decision it turned out to be.
After driving it around for two months and all the whiles lurking around the forum, I finally decided to just buy EVERYTHING and modify it. Crazy right? Well you only live once so why not!
After falling short on find a trusted shop to do all the modifications, I decided to just do it the hard way and do it myself. Maybe along the way if i come upon a shop that i could trust, i will hand over my baby to them.
So here we goooooo....
First off was a heavy duty 6000lb car lift from American Automotive Equipment. There was a member in the 997 forum using it and i just basically copied him.
Delivery:

Bleeding and setting up:

Load testing:

So the lift works!!... I've worked on cars before and the idea of crawling underneath a car supported with jackstands with limited space was a big pain. Access to the underside of the car with the lift was awesome! Visibilty, access, and freedom of movement was all there. For people considering working on their own cars, do yourself a BIG favor and pick one up. The EZ carlift seems like a good alternative.
I have to give credit where credit is due. With the help of eclou's AWE exhaust install thread, the removal and install of the exhaust was pretty straightforward. I've met elcou in person before and seems like he is a really nice guy.
Lets start:

Bumper off:

intercoolers off:

exhaust off:

I sprayed all the bolts with PB blaster as recommended. I was lucky enough not to break any bolts. The exhaust brackets was the most annoying and tedious task to slide off the hangers, but i finally got it off.
Cargraphis exhaust on:

all the bolts were treated with anti-seize lube before reinstalling. I may end up buying new bolts if the exhaust comes off for any reason.

Thanks Neil! I love working on my cars too. It's just time is limited when you have to be responsible. HA! Looks like i have a long way to catch up to you Neil. Next mods will have to wait. I have to take her into to the dealership to fix the hydrolic oil leak coming from the left front side wheel area. =(

Nice job and great "how to do shots". Did much the same thing with mine some months back (but with some good help) when installing my tubi except the photography detail. First time up its definately not a job for the fainthearted as you would know.
Its all procedure and perseverance
. It'll be way easier next time round. Btw I noticed the bolts on the outside of the turbo looked to me like they have too much thread beyond the nut indicating the tread on the turbo end has not gone all the way. Are you positive you got enough thread purchase into the turbo housing on those? It gets real hot so best to have enough thread to hang things on. We wound up using all new nuts and studs as we had a problem with a few of them damaging the thread on the way off and they didnt want to go all the way back in on the install
.
Also noticed you havent got the heat sheilds on the turbos. They too take up some of the outer thread depth on the studs.

Thanks for all the compliments!
C4SxM5 - the carlift in the group buy is the EZ carlift. Its screw driven instead of hydraulic.
tranman - no check engine lights. Test pipe have O2 bungs welded to it. All i did was installed O2 sensor. No check engine light at all. Lots of carbon monoxide smell tho.. lolz
speed21 - The bolts are on all the way. I checked the back side of the turbo housing to make sure all eight bolts are flush with the back side. I did in fact forget to put the turbo shields on which would be the reason the bolts are sticking out more on the exhaust side. lol. Im not too concerned about it because the exhaust is coming back out in about 3 weeks or so...

....not. Yup Im thinking of changing mine already. Just trying to figure what to put on that has zero drone but a great note. I'm told EP1 has it resolved

Above is an easy fix; my car and others' have had the same problem. I am not "mechanical" AT ALL so please Bob/Neil/anyone corrects me if I am going to totally screw this up: It is the "reservoir for the slave cylinder of the hydraulic clutch assist, which in the Turbo is shared with the steering wheel assist." Did I get that one right?

At any rate, I believe this to be the most frequent problem with 997 Turbo. No big deal. My car actually had to have it replaced twice, as the first replacement didn't work right out from the factory.
speed21 - thanks for looking out! my exhaust is coming out for more add-on mods. Im in love with the Cargraphic Race.
Cannga - Yea... i've searched on the forums about that slave cylinder. Thats why im bringing it to the dealer. =) Your shout out will come when i continue to the suspension mods!

in that area (I am really not "car-mechanics-wise" at all!). I need to look again tomorrow morning. What did you wash the area with? Car soap and water?
I know if I use water it will drain easily down to the left wheel well. In fact, when I first had the problem the HEAD MECHANIC of the local Porsche Dealer diagnosed the problem as my Bilstein leaking fluid.
Bilstein actually sent me a replacement coilover before other people on the forum diagnosed the problem for me.
