Whoops, I missed the "07 turbo" line, I thought it was an 09 like mine. I like the new PCM and interior changes.

Both are awesome so you cant go wrong either way. If you have to get AWD then get the Turbo. It is still a 997 and the stick is very easy to drive in the car. Long trips are not an issue. Plus when your blasting around in the turbo banging shift and getting that rush of power it will be worth it for the 0.1% of time you are in traffic. It is also a better long term investment I would belive because the 4S has not depreciated at all yet where the turbo has taken the majority of its depreciation already. To me its simple a faster car that is more fun to drive that will cost you less up front and sell for more in the future. Good luck with way.

I looked into this for Belgium: By the time it's on the road, you pay an equal amount of money for a car with no warranty (as you might get 6 months when bought locallly). Also there is always the risk of transport, which can bring a lot of hassle. Then there is the special import check which is way more complicated and a lot more expensive as compared to the annual check-up.
Also you pay even import tax on the transport costs, as with all goods (ridiculous if you ask me).

Do you have an extra tax for cars in Slovenia like Holland? Otherwise I'd consider checking mobile.de for some tiptronic turbo's for under 80.000€..

Example 2
Example 3

... don't let a C4S owner or seller talk you into an unexpected spanking on the street or at the track, facing a Stock 997.1 TT (let alone a modified one – which is often the case). 911 C4S with PDK is a very respectable car in looks and performance, however it’s not built by Porsche to be a 997.1 Turbo killer. If the bullet-proof power, racing heritage and “historical prestige” of 911 Turbo is NOT what you're seaking … and you want new and auto tranny, go C4S. Otherwise it’s a no brainer, get a 911 Twin Turbo.

I went from a 993 Turbo to a 996 Turbo to a 997 S launch car (wanted to move to the 997 but Turbos were not out yet) and then to the 997 Turbo. It did not take long for me to regret selling the 996 Turbo and going to the 997 S. Once you have a Turbo, it is difficult to go back. GET THE TURBO.

My office partner has a C4S. After a short drive in my 997tt he was blown away by how slow his C4S felt in comparison. I've driven a variety of P-cars and am enjoying my "dream car" immensely. If boost/acceleration is important to you then don't even worry about PCM etc... I hardly even turn my radio on while in this beast.

I was exactly in the same boat as you on deciding which car. Both are very nice cars. Since you mention you have two kids. I would say the turbo push and the stick shifting wouldn't be too comfortable for the children. PDK is just pure shifting. You wouldn't be able to know if the car is already shifted. I test drove the 997tt.1 stick then I went to test drive a C2S PDK and I was blast away with the turbo's push to back seat feel. If this is your daily I would say C4S PDK. If you are power hungry and enjoy shifting then go for the turbo. PDK you get more gadgets and newer look but turbo you get all the power. Both cars are good decision. You can't go wrong!

Thank you all for your input...

I decided to take another test drive in each car, possibly a bit longer one and try to decide. As for importing a car, we do have a special tax here in Slovenia calle DMV (motor vehicles tax), homologation etc. So the costs are quite high. I found a company that specializes in importing cars from USA and will phone them tomorrow. I 'd hate to have speedometer in mph though. Can amyone tell me more about buying a used Porsche in US? What do I have to look for? How about CPO (I think this is some kind of guarantee?)?

I checked about importing a car from US - the price is about the same after taxes, other costs and transport. Same applies for importing from other EU member states - when all the costs are added up, there is almost no price difference. Sadly, it seems that I'm left with my original choice.

I also checked about CPO (certified Porsche pre-owned) and it seems we also have this here in Slovenia, and both cars were bought and serviced at the same dealership in our Capitol. Even the mileage is almost the same.

Back to arranging longer test drives and deciding. One progress I've made is the decision that stick or PDK is irrelevant (even went to talk to our local rallye legend who owns a 996 turbo and he is convinced manual is the way to go - he hasn't tried PDK though)... And I guess if PCM 2.1 bothers me too much I can swap it with an aftermarket Pioneer Avic unit as I've seen on the forum.... just have to check if any local shops know how to do that..

I have an 07 tt. I don't love the nav, but I still use it. BUT, choosing a better Nav over the power and torque of a tt takes me aback. I'd rather have a tt with no nav and no radio over a C4. Spend on suspension and a flash/dyno tune and you'll have a monster that puts head shaking smiles on your face EVERY day you drive it.

I drive all the cars listed below on a regular basis so you can assume that I enjoy fast cars and that power means a lot to me. What I’m referring to is the overall balance of the cars and the comparison. A ’09 C4S PDK has many improvements over a 997.1 Porsche period. I think that many of you that criticize this have not spent any time in a PDK car. When I drive the C4S I don’t think that it’s underpowered at all and if that’s all that matters to you get a Nissan.

The OP raises a very interesting and well thought out question and it deserves likewise responses.

The problem is as follows: I KNOW 997.2 4S is not a 997.1 TT killer. BUT, since this will be my DD, and since this will be my first Porsche (I drive a diesel chiptuned 3.0 TDI Audi Q7 presently, can you imagine?), I was thinking that maybe bit nimbler car with an improved interior and comfort (I'm a manager and co-owner of a company and jumping into the car and driving off at the moments notice happens quite frequently, and I have tons of phone calls while driving and use satnav quite a lot) could be a good start, and then there is allways the TT "upgrade" somewhere down the line to keep my thoughts busy. When a 997.2 or later TT comes into my price range, I could switch.

The only mistake I made was test driving a very respectably spec'd TT (Akrapovic exhaust, short throw shifter, Sport Chrono Turbo etc.) in a very good condition (as new). This threw me off balance quite a bit ....

P.S. A Nissan????? No Way. I know GT-R is a great car, but it simply does not excite me in any way. You see, to me at least, cars are like women - no matter how nice she is, how good she cooks and how good she is at all other things, if the looks and chemistry aren't there, nothing will happen. Sadly, Nissan has many qualities, but to borrow something from our neighbours the Italians, I can't imagine anyone shouting "Countach" when a Nissan drives by.....

The sad thing is the Japanese have made cars that really do hold up in the looks department. I am a big fan of the RX7, 1990s 300zx and NSX - all great looking cars.

Unfortunately the GTR just looks like it hit every branch as it fell out of the ugly tree. I'm hopeful that one day they completely redesign the body and knock out some weight.

But, the 4S also has its advantages since it is a newer model, especially PCM (touchscreen, iPod integration, MP3, bluetooth to connect my iPhone 4 etc.). I'm also not sure about the engine - The turbo is a proven engine and it would be great to own such a piece of race heritage, on the other hand the new engine has DFI and better economy.

My main concerns (if I put aside my biggest worry that the 4S will not be fast enough for me once I get used to it and there will always be that Turbo nag) are:

1. While I enjoyed driving the Turbo immensely, I'm afraid I will get tired of stick shifting after time.... especially on longer trips. It seems hardly possible, but the thought remains. Especially since PDK is a really great transmission.
2. Clutch on the Turbo - I heard that it usually needs replacing before 100.000 km are up. Is that true? Is it possible to replace with a more durable one?
3. PCCB - both cars have it, so it is no decision maker, but since the car will not be used on track, I expect once the ceramics wear out I will replace them with steel. Is it a difficult conversion?

In short, I think my heart decided on a Turbo and my brain on a 4S. Any thoughts from guys with more experience?
I've owned 997 C2 and 997 Turbo, and have driven nearly all versions of 997's, including PDK Turbo and Boxster. I love all Porsche's and enjoyed my 997 C2 but let's get this straight, the 997.1 Turbo is a NO BRAINER choice here. It is a special car with near supercar performance level, and with GT1 engine, "arguably" the best Turbo engine ever made. It is destined to be a classic and the people who are buying used 997 Turbo are very smart and lucky. 997 PDK? Great sport car? Yes. Supercar? Most definitely no! When I had my C2, I always secretly wished I had a Turbo -- don't make the same mistake.

1. If you have any doubt, ask yourself this question, many on this forum move from C2/C4 to Turbo, how many have moved back? Have you ever run across a "normal" person who goes backward from a Turbo to a C2/C4?

2. You are buying a "sport car"? Why is PCM (great as it is) a consideration on a level with "astonishing power difference"?

3. PDK? Be very very careful. This could be one of the most expensive mistakes you ever make. Is PDK fast? Yes. Fun? Not necessarily, and I am not the only one who feels that way. If you are an "automatic" type of driver, then sure go for PDK. But if you've always liked manual box? Stay with the manual. There is a thing called "driver involvement" that I think PDK is lacking.

4. I hope you don't think C4 is a more nimble car than Turbo (a couple of posts above this one)? Just remember: a good man doesn't let Turbo engine drop below 3000 rpm. :-)
Kidding aside, I somewhat agree in the sense that the stock Turbo has a soft suspension and together with the Turbo lag, could make the car ponderous at times. The soft suspension is the only flaw of this car, and is the reason why many here change to coilover system like Bilstein. Once on Bilstein, this is the least expensive "supercar" that you could buy. Just my personal opinion. Good luck and have fun.
