Apr 997tt man vs Apr 997tt tip vs Evotech 997tt man .... Game over...
After a looong time and many many debates some nights ago we went for a spin together with Skandalis (tip Apr), an Evotech 997 manual and my old 996Proto K24/18g to make some test runs and come up with the verdict and the winner
Cars:
- My manual 997 with an APR flash, Europipe Stage 2 exhaust and BMC drop in filter - otherwise completely OEM and stock
- Skandalis 997 withn APR flash, Speedtech exhaust, intake with dual cone filters (I do not remember which one), Dymag carbon wheels
- manual 997 with Evotech flash, full exhaust (I think evotech) - otherwise stock
- manual 996 with K24/18g's, 60lbs injectors, Protomotive tuned, running at 1.5 bar boost ( I never took it past 1.35 when I owned it)
1st test run was done between me and the Evotech car, which was no contest at all I can say... easily in front (more than 10 car lengths) from roll on with 2nd gear until 250 km/h - he could not hang on besides me for more than 2 secs.
2nd test run Skandalis car with the Evotech from roll on and 2nd gear (not a great match up for a tip vs man battle) but nevertheless Skand was in front 3-4 cars all the time
3rd test run me vs my old 996 (cranked up to 1.5bar) from 2nd gear all the way up to 300km/h we ran door to door and completely identical
4th and final run of the night was the long awaited long debated and heavily disputed run with me and Skandalis
He said that because of the huge difference between the 2 gearboxes (and the results we previously witnessed when we both ran with the evotech car) there is no point in running from 2nd gear as I would walk him with ease. Thus he suggested we gave it a shot from 1st gear and 20 miles rolling so that he would beat me and shut me up once and for all
.
Well I must admit he hang close to me until around 160-170 km/h, at 200 I was only about 2 cars ahead and then at 320km/h he had disappeared from my mirrors... with around 12-14 cars inbetween us...
I asked him if everything went ok and when he braked and he said everything was ok and that he braked when I did, so this was the actual difference between the 2 cars.
So I can safely conclude that manual is faster than tiptronic in anything but 0-400m. This one remains to be seen, where most probably I believe that tip might be a tad quicker due to launch control... (but do not bet on it Dimitris... the devil is in the details as they say and the stoplight reaction will count as well this time...
)
All in all it was a good night (obviously for me) with lots of fun and no mishaps (police etc) as the road was practically empty...

Nice job. I love TIPs, but as I have repeatedly said, manuals (with a proper driver) are always faster at speed.
Props to all involved.

am sure you were running high octane fuel in your car and running stage 3 tune, about the 6speed and tip , i will tell you somethin i raced 2 guys who are running 6speed and as you know am running moded Tip .. they also were moded there cars with bigger turbos , (GT30s) i killed them by 2 cars maybe or more til the 5th gear , i can not remmber !!!
i think tip is great when you modify it with cultchs and valve body .. etc etc !!
great kill bro ..enjoy your ride

Well done guys. Wish I was there.
We do have to get together at some point... Εχασα το τηλεφωνο σου, στειλε μου ενα ΠΜ!
I think I saw Skands car a few weeks ago, I noticed the wheels... very nice.
Are both your tunes the same program? same boosts and all?

Actually we were all (I think) running premium unleaded pump gas and I do not know what would happen if the tiptronic was indeed modded. Do not believe there would be any difference if everything else is the same on the cars... manual will be faster in higher speeds as I can see!

I (and Dimitris as I know) always use same Greek refinery EKO premium unleaded pump gas (labeled 100RON = around 94-95 AKI) and always run the "race" setting from my APR cuise control map switcher
Car runs perfect all the time as can verify Skandalis whose car has done about 15000 miles the last 2 years like this already.

these gatherings do not occur very often but when they do... well they really are a blast...

Oh and yes we do have the exact same tune Dimitris and I..
I met the APR guys when I was down by Vouliagmeni, at the shop that did the ceramic coating on my exhaust tips... They had an interesting VW golf there...
What about your IC's? gen 1 or 2?

Thanks for posting Madsex!!
We had a major discussion about this topic a few weeks ago. Scott and I were unsuccessful in convincing some about the results of similar modded tips vs 6sps. Your findings seem to bear us out though...

I would like to add some comments regarding these races...
1)All races were done with just premium unleaded fuel...no fuel additives,no octane boosters...
2)Above 200km it is clear that manual cars are faster than tip cars...
3)We still have one more race to do...From a standstill...I am sure my car will start faster but wanted to know at what speed a same manual car will manage to pass me...
4)it was really exciting to see 4 911 turbos to race together...
