Both areas you're referring to are for vibration damping elements which equates to noise reduction. The aluminum posts are mounted on some sort of sheet metal disk that is stuck on w/some adhesive. The tabs/ears are for mounting counter weight style vib. dampers. You can run w/neither measure but can probably expect some knocking noise when going forward to reverse and vice versa.

Those are glued to the stock pads, I always removed them and mated them with my new pads. If you don't , it will be noisy for sure.
Re the holes in the pagids, those are for a pin that's used on a 996, some AM pads that are used in both 996/7 will have those holes.
