Rock/Paint chips

My 2010 TT already has several paint chips on the hood, caused by rocks i assume. in the dark it's not noticable. but in direct sunlight, it's very noticable and really bothering me.

i've never had to deal with this in my other cars so i'm a fish out of water and looking for advice. what do people do? having someone fix it with touchup paint seems like it wouldn't come out perfect and seems a bit pedestrian for such a nice and expensive car. am i wrong and this process is up to snuff? other options?

There is and will always be only two options. Touch up or respray. Touchup will never look perfect. May not be noticible in low light or from far away. Respray is expensive and will raise red flags when you sell the car.

Either way, clear bra it next time to save the hassle the second time around.

respray won't be a problem for resale if it's done well by a reputable shop who knows how to do good work. Like you said though, then clear bra it (again, pay for a reputable installer).

That's what i was worried about - no great solution. How do people feel about touch up? Do you prefer just to live with the chips than touching up?

I thought about the clear bra in the beginning, but i don't care for the look. I know, this chipped look isn't great either.

This is why I always preach about the clear bra. I'd rather barely look at a paint protection system then road rash. If you have a good guy then have him touch it up with factory paint and clear bra it.

Where are you located. If you have a high end detail shop there is a best way to touch up a chip. Assuming no rust, you take a tooth pick and every day place a small layer of touch up paint in the chip. Over time it will fill in. Clean the chip with IPA (Isopropyl Alcohol) between coats. You will eventually get a small bump in the paint there the paint inside the ship is over the rest of the car.s surface.<O</O
Let it cure for a week. Once it is dry and hard to the touch purchase a sheet of 1500, 200, 2500 and 3000 unigrit sand papers. This is the best brand I know of since the abrasives are very consistent in size. Take a hole puncher and punch 3 or 4 holes of each. Glue the holes to a pencil. Using a spinning motion start with the 1500 and move to the 3000 as the bump wears away. When it feels level get some polish, I like menzerna SIP on a DA, and an orange pad, then, 203 on a white pad and lastly 85rd on a black or blue polishing pad.<O</O
<O</O

After you have the car all polished out, I would have the front end covered in Venture on the hood and 3M scotch guard everywhere else that the wind hits or pebbles fly from the tires.<O</O
<O</O
<O</O

If you don't feel comfortable doing this your self it can be done by a competent detail shop or even a skilled auto body. Don't go anywhere you were not recommended by a local Porsche or exotic guy as a hack an wreck you car quite easily.<O</O
<O</O

List your location and someone will direct you. This board is great that way.<O</O

My TT has clear film by Premier, but on some other vehicles I have tried both Dr. Color Chip and Langka. Both are similar but I like Dr. Color Chip a little better. You can get decent results and for about $50 it might be worth a try.

If you find an bra installer who knows what they're doing, they'll pull the emblem, lights, and grilles, cover the panels and wrap them around the edges and reinstall everything as if nothing's there. It's pricey, but turns out beautiful.

I couldn't have said it better myself ! On the touch up note ... Dr. Colorchip works quite well .. I would suggest checking them out then have your vehicle inspected by the shop you want to have clear bra your vehicle just to make sure everything is ok before a clear bra application. Clear bra adhesive is no joke.

Excellent post. However, why venture just on the hood and 3M every where else why not all venture or all 3M ?

I was under the impression 3M will eventually yellow out and btw what's the difference between the two anyway ?

the new clear films are very good. You may never have the car long enough to see it detereroate. Its the best long term answer to front end rock chips. Unless you would just rather repaint every 2 to 3 yrs. Touching up is the worst solution and always shows.

Installer is very important when it comes to paint protection film. Quality of film is just as crucial as well.

This is what it looks like on a black car.
