GT2/RS titanium OEM muffler modification
We have done this very intricate titanium exhaust modification on both GT2 and a GT2RS. Both owner's wanted to keep their light, OEM exhaust system for originality but wanted a more aggressive sound. We know the Porsche GT2 factory Akrapovic designed and manufactured titanium exhaust (and cats) is good for at least 620HP, as the part numbers for GT2 and GT2RS are identical. Unfortunately, even the mighty GT2 RS does not sound like it looks; certainly no where near the exhaust character expected of a Porsche GT car. Or as the RS owner put it: "my 4 door E63 AMG sounds better then my GT2!
This modification of the factory muffler consists of fabricating two sleeves out of titanium and weld them at both ends to bypass the outer resonators, effectively closing them off for a deeper, throatier sound at idle. Further, we remove the perforated baffle walls entirely from the middle chamber for more of direct higher pitched growl at higher RPM under boost. Refer to the cut away illustration photo for reference on muffler internals.
The sound is appr. 20% louder than stock with the OEM 600 cell catalytic converters. With high flow 200 cell cats (we used FVD's excellent GT2 cats) it is close to Akrapovic's aftermarket system in level and tone and the turbo spool is clear. With cat bypass (ECU reprogramming required), the sound under boost is a wicked snarl--not for the timid. This in-house modification is typically a 3-5 day turn around.
