Braking Technique for PCCBs

I've heard lots of reports of some folks completely toasting their PCCBs on the track, and others report frequent track use with no issues. With the question of pads and fluids aside, many say that braking technique is to blame here.

So... the question is, do any of our resident trackheads have any advice on braking? What to do / what not to do?

Thanks!

If you can afford $16K++ to replace rotors and pads, drive 'em like you stole 'em.

If that seems a little steep to you, as it has to many other track rats, change over to steel before they go in the crapper........

I don't think it's an issue of "how you use them". Either you're going fast and need to get on them or you're not going very fast and can kind of dink around. I wouldn't want "brake management issues" to become my reason for being slower than I otherwise might be. There are plenty of other legitimate reasons for that! Best,

Edit: I should add that if you are doing actual racing, like 1 hour + enduro stuff, then brake management becomes a big issue. But for DE's, which I assumed you meant, or even short sprint races, then, not so much.

For questions regarding PCCB at the track, the one place I would most definitely search &/or post questions is the rennlist web site, 997 GT2/GT3 forum. There are many serious and knowledgeable track junkies there and I am certain there have been extensive discussions regarding PCCB on that forum.

It's been a long time since I followed this issue, as I've found it irrelevant to my use of the car (for street usage, for all practical purposes PCCB generation 2 lasts forever :-)), but there are a couple of potential issues/explanations regarding PCCB at the track. No flame please - this is just my vague recollection:
1. PSM activating and applying brake repeatedly if you are not a smooth driver.
2. With iron brake, fades occur as brakes over-heat, forcing driver to slow or take a break and allow brakes to cool. With PCCB, there is no fade, or less fade, with over-heating, drivers therefore continue to drive cars, destroying pads first, then brake rotors as a result of the damaged pads. Note well it is the damaged pads that kill the rotors.

Bottom line is yes there are members there who use PCCB at the track, and live to tell about it. I believe they use it for same reasons I've mentioned previously, 35 lbs. less unsprung weight and the hands-of-God initial bite, and additionally for the lack of fade. Don't believe less brake dust is considered as much a significant plus to those guys . And yes they argue back and forth about PCCB vs. Big Red, just as we do here. Do your search - just be careful, lots of Turbo haters there. Kidding - but it's true they don't talk kindly about our Turbo's soft suspension and handling.
