Red face

I have an 07 tip.

To me the tip on a 485hp AWD monster is the perfect combination. Point car towards destination, floor it, sh * t eating grin, check!

When I had a PDK 997S I enjoyed driving it more like a manual, shifting nearer to redline, etc. The speed and grip of the Turbo gives me less time to mess with perfect shifting, instead I keep it in auto (sport) and concentrate on steering, brakes and weight transfer.

Your car friends giving you sh * t, unless they're driving a Gt2 and know what they're doing, would get lapped by you pretty quickly in your Turbo tip if you did a track day together

Enjoy your ride! I have an 09 997tt manual and absolutely love it. I know however, that on the track, unless I'm perfect on every shift and every corner a similarly tip car will get me. I also realize PDK, TIP, SMG..etc. are the wave of the future. The stick is a dying breed. But I'm holding out!

In the end who cares what anyone says. You have one of the best cars in the world. Don't let your boys mess with your head! You live in Boston - you have to deal with those nutty Beantown drivers first! (I lived up in West Roxbury for 3yrs...UGH! I love driving on the shoulder during rush hour...NOT!!!)

Question: How many folks went through the same deal (or ordeal) & how many folks still love their tip?? (yes, trying to make myself feel better) -TPT
I am in the same situation, abroad it gets even worth. However Porsche recommends the Tip. I guess because the engine has too much HP to drive slow and relaxed in your country side. Had the 996 turbo with stick. Using it on a daily basis my 996 turbo stressed me a lot. Every start becomes a Race start. You must really concentrate on getting the start done. In the city, were I live it gets really annoying, when at every red light somebody shows up with a merc or audi trying to be faster. This clutch is also very bad for the tires. I don't know how many starts you had? I had enough and I want my turbo on a daily basis. Its not for the garage.
I can assure you, the Tip is definitely faster. I have proofen this to many clutch driver - I mean faster in every situation. The speedshift change the gears very late and very good - you can not do that with stick. Also you become a better driver, because both hands stay on the steering wheel. During the race very, very important. After my 996 turbo I wanted the tip - which is very good, especially the speed shift 5 gear. But most people dont even know and think 7 gears is better. Longer gears lead to less declutch. 5 gears is enough for a 500HP engine

Excellent Analysis - Looking to improve my novice-like track skills - so, hopefully, my learning curve will now accelerate! I do have another vehicle - but, I really enjoy driving the turbo everyday - which means Boston traffic, small town side streets, suburbia traffic and...traffic. I do wonder how many folks drive the TT in manual mode only...type of car that takes some time exploring its capabilities.... thanks for the reply Frizz.

I usually give the Merc/Audi a head start...just to be fair.

FWIW -- I drove my 997S PDK in manual mode about 50% of the time.

I never drive my 997tt Tip in manual mode. Partly because the Tip isn't as good/fun to shift manually as the PDK. But other aspect is just, the car is so da*n fast there isn't as much time for shifting. It's a point and shoot car. awd + excellent handling + 485 HP means a bad driver can still drive it pretty fast / well (unlike say a GT2 or a 997S). It is somewhat of a 'simpler' experience from that standpoint -- but actually, IMO, a more 'exciting' one!

There's a reason why automakers such as Ferrari and Lambo only offer sequential transmissions in most of their cars now, it's called progress and technology!
5 years ago I vowed to only own manual cars, and now I'm on my second Porsche PDK and will never go back to manual!

I've had the same type of comments from other enthusiasts as you have experienced. It boils down to "different strokes for different folks"

Upgrades, I would recommend one start with exhaust and mapping. If you intend to go further, such as plenum, intercoolers, throttle body, Y-tube and turbos you would need to have the ECU re-mapped with every change. The mapping can be a very expensive proposition (mine has been re-mapped twice and now I will need it again). If you do everything at once, only one mapping!!!

I started with headers, muffler and GIAC mapping. Wow, what a difference!!!!
Next move was GT2 Champion turbos, plenum, Y-tube, throttle body, GT2 .2 intercoolers and GIAC mapping. Again, what a great result!!
Next is my TIP will be removed and more clutch packs, etc added to strengthen it. By the way, the PDK CANNOT handle the power the modified TIP can. I may change the exhaust and intercoolers, still need to be decided though. And, once again re-mapping.

You will need to kind of determine "How far do you want to go". It's cheaper in the long run to do everything at once and avoid re-mapping.

An additional comment I read quite often is "The Turbo has enough power" Of course it does, but if you can have more without harming the engine why not? What I have learned is the engine is limited ONLY by the amount of air/fuel it is given, that is why the larger plenum, intercoolers, intake pipes, Y-tubes are the move which allows the cylinders to receive more air/fuel. I hear that when one reaches 800hp then engine strengthening is recommended. I'm close to that but I have not decided to go the strengthening route as yet.

Enjoy.... This is the most FUN vehicle I have ever owned.

Tipsters..

Great Info! - Drove the car today for about 3 hours - tried all modes - seems like sport mode provides much more response...paddles would be cool on this car. Looking forward to more test drives ( next time w/out the wife - as I could have done w/out the shrieks ; )

I have a 07 tip and I love it. Used to think manual was the way to go but using it as a daily driver, wife drives it, the tip is great. Use it on the track too and leave it in auto mode. Just concentrate on braking and lines and let the car make you look like a star....
