997.1 oil

Any one have experience with Motul 8100 oil for 997 Turbo? Porsche calls for Mobil 1 - am wondering if grade V synthetic is better?

I think any quality synthetic will be fine. As long as it meets all the specs. I would run what you like and change at 5k. Use an Oem filter and call it a day.

This is what the shop where I take my car uses. I've been happy with it so far.

I go with Redline. From what I hear, Mobil 1 has not kept up development and their viscosity rating apprently varies and tends to be on the lower end of the spectrum, e.g., the 10-40W tends to be more like 5W-35 and the heat resistance is not as robust as other synthetics.

Most are going to Castrol as a direct replacement, but for racing and higher quality Redline is what was recommended to me and that is what I exclusively run.

Cheers.

Source of info on Mobil 1??

My dealer recently changed from Mobil 1 0W-40 to Castrol Edge 5W-40.

Source of information is the tuners and mechanics I work with for my cars. Nothing scientific, but I trust them and on my VW the rate of oil consumption dropped by a half when I went to Castrol and in the turbo the car runs cooler and less oil consumption when I run the Redline as recommended by my tuner. I just got a Vette and it has Mobil 1 and it will be switched over to Castrol recommended by my tuner there.

If an oil is approved for use in Porsche sports cars (circa 1984 to current) look for A40 on the label.

Or visit your local dealer and ask a tech to print out the list of approved oils.

From an approved oils list I have dated March 2011 I read that Motul 8100 X-clean 5w-40 oil is approved until 08.03.2013.

A more recent approved oils list could have Motul 8100 X-cess 5w-40 back on the list. Its approval expired 23.10.2011.

And yet Redline oil has never been approved by Porsche for use in its engines, and is not AFIAK know used in any factory racing engines.

And Mobil 10w-40 is not an approved oil either. In fact no 10w-xx oil is approved. Just 0w-40, 5w-40 and at least one (last time I looked) 5w-50 oil.

You got a lot of faith in what you hear to make a decision to run an unapproved oil.

The 10W-40 was used as an example to illustrate that the actual is like a 5W-35 as Mobil 1 tends to be "thinner" than stated.

Also, manufacturer recommendations are not just based on performance but more so determined by commercial rights and business negotiations. That is a main reason why Mobil 1 was so popular by manufacturers but some are changing over to Castrol because of the quality.

And yes, I do put a lot of credibility in the tuners that I work with as they push the product to beyond what Porsche would for street cars.

However, I do agree with you on using approved products especially if the car is stock or dealer maintained or under warranty.

I just change to Motul and have driven about 1000 miles works fine for me. I haven't driven enough to notice much from regular but the temps are lower.
