FWIW, I just read an article with the following excerpt:

"Earlier this week, the family claimed plastic road markers may have been responsible for the crash that killed the star after stunt experts claimed the 2005 Porsche Carrera GT driven by Paul's friend hit the markers, called Bott's Dots, and careered out of control."

I'm no expert on the Carrera GT by any means, but the above statement seems possible. With so much power directly soley to the rear wheels and with no electronic stability control, I suspect any imperfection on the road makes the Carrera difficult to handle and easy to lose control, esp if it's not driven on a controlled track environment. IMHO.

I'm on the track maybe 5% of my miles that I drive. I'm not a pro...the extra 3/10 of a second is meaningless...to me. I love the sound of my 911, love the way it drives, love acceleration...its my little monster. I would love her as much with PDK - but have more fun with manual.

Owning a Porsche is NOT about PDK versus manual - lets not take this there.
Here here. Very well put.

I have owned 18 911's going back to 1978. And since that time I have driven virtually every 911 Porsche ever made, including the much-lauded 991 PDK's, which I did not like - not because they weren't responsive or marginally faster in transition, but because it wasn't any fun.

Today, my older friends love the PDK because 1] they're older and don't like to shift, and 2] because it's easier to sit back and let the cart do all the work. I get it. It's easy. PDK is more technically efficient. It's like being a speed racer without having to grapple with the car.

I also ride English rather than Western because I enjoy full contact with a horse. I hope the analogy is appreciated. Now go enjoy which ever transmission makes you happy. Geeeeeeeeeeez. This is beginning to sound like the Vette vs Porsche debate.

Having driven both PDK and manual on the track I'll only offer this. Quite simply, PDK let's you focus on braking, apexes and accelerating out of a turn. I love to shift too and agree it is a very fun aspect of driving, but it is distracting. In a good way, most of the time. In the case of an emergency, it could make the difference between focusing on just the right amount of counter steer and not the clutch or maybe it won't make a difference. Personally, I doubt it would make a difference, but it could be a factor.

In the case of the Carrera GT, the car is just dicey. Witness Jay Leno nearly crashing on a track. Guy here named Numme who wrecked a customer car, "delivering it". I'm sure there are many more examples.

johnww- my 07 TT tip upshifts automatically at redline in manual mode from 1 to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd etc. I've not driven 997.2 TT but can't imagine that the newer much better PDK doesn't do the same thing as the older tip.

From my track time in those cars, its " in a spin both feet in" But that wouldnt have saved Walker. If what you are saying is true then the crash did not have to do with a shift, which no driver would do mid corner.
He did something with the gas unsettling the car, grenading the engine with a Money Shift ( blowing your engine missing a gear) would have made it worse.
