I think it comes from the F&F days, if you recall all the kids had body kits and no money for rims. SO they had the steel ones, that were black. Then they started buying the cheap black ones because chrome was $$ AND the RACERS used black wheels so they decided to say that the reason they had black rims was "for the track"

Not that I like chrome, but its funny how if you had black wheels in the late 90s early 2000s you couldnt afford nice wheels. Now its the rage LOL
