I have a 997.2TT and a few months back, when pulling out the Engine oil tube with the cap unscrewed, the plastic hinge snapped off. I did cringe but thought that it wouldnt be a big deal.

Fast forward two months later, went to the track today and after coming home, the Engine oil indicator was down to the last bar, so I decided to top it off. As I twisted off the cap, it slipped and dropped into the Engine compartment right below the Engine oil tube.

Not sure if I can get to it without removing either the bumper or the airbox?

Is it safe to drive to a shop without the cap?

My other solution is to buy a replacement cap and just not bother with the cap that fell into the compartment. should i not do that?

I wouldn't drive with the cap off. I've seen people do that and burp oil all over the engine compartment. Not a good idea.
What I would do is buy one of those mirrors with the retractable handles at Sears and try to find it. You could also jack the car up and look from underneath. Removing the airbox is easy to do yourself and will open up a bunch of space to look inside.
Chances are it's not lodged in a position to hurt anything, but I wouldn't take that risk.

If I recall correctly the 997's have a pressurized oil system and driving without a cap would really create a mess and possibly damage the engine.

 

Yes, thats right, it is pressurized.
I stuck my head and saw the cap lodged beneath the belt area. The space was tight and when I went to reach for it, the cap fell further into the abyss. I heard a clank and I think it dropped to the lowest part of the engine compartment. The cap should be at a much safer location at least and now I have to buy a new cap and see if I can get it on the next spark plug change.

 

You may want to just try and remove the airbox. That will give you a clear shot of it. You may even be able to see better by just popping off the Y-Pipe and not fully removing the air-box?
