The whole conversation seems a little silly to me.
Personally, I love a manual transmission. On a twisty mountain road, I find it to be very fun to drive a manual. I don't lose any sleep worrying about the fact that a 997.1 TT with a tip might be a little bit faster.
Agree so why the need for some to bash on the other version of the car?
I totally understand your position and can see that. I have said this in other threads that I enjoy working the possible lines for twisties and the tip enables me to do that. I really dont think you are gonna get out of either car throw the keys down like a child and storm off about how miserable the drive was
The 997tt is my third Porsche after a 930 and 964 turbo, and this is my first tip. I was apprehensive at first, and the tip did take some getting used to, but I have to say that now I absolutely love it. It may or may not be somewhat faster than a 6mt, but I'll tell you this - it is a real blast to put it in manual and sport mode; drop the hammer and push the shift button at or near redline -- YEEHAW!!! You can have your 6mt: I love my tip.
Don't worry its faster. The MT crowd will spend 10k to get to tip times. Its an old wives tale about it being a "slushbox" and parroted by folks stuck in the 80-90s that are used to their mums dodge dog caravan.
But like Dennis said, the time number is a silly argument, I engage to put facts out instead of "what the local dude told me one time at the bar", very few of us are getting 100+ track days a year and either car works, just for me and I think most that sit in traffic would agree the tip just does it better in that area. Also if you love figuring the puzzle of the best line and how the road effects the car. Hell I search for the best line driving my tahoe towing a boat, maybe not for speed but for stability but its still fun.
I completely agree. I'm not sure why some folks feel the need to bash something different. Again, I prefer the 6MT, but I would have no problem with a tip either. These are fantastic cars in any form and we seem to be looking for things to nitpick!

+1 rep to you.
These cars are some if not the best in the world and its that some people will go out and JUST buy X tranny because they hear things or its some sort of verification of manhood.
I mean what else are you gonna get? a .1 will run with a 458, a .2 will destroy it and its still 4 years older than the 458. If you are truly into performance then what are the options? So why are we bashing one version over the other? A: its a couple TENTHS of a second B: both are still running from the other brands and more fun doing it. C: ok i concede that the italians are a tad more sexy...

True you guys are right!!! The 997 turbo is so damn sexy to me !!
I'm missing my need for speed and my tip! She was dropped off at Brumos' Porsche 2 weeks ago for a tranmission fluid leak (covered under CPO warranty they had to order a part from Germany?! Really?! So it's taking a little longer.
I'm really missing the turbo and her wide hips. She's only a weekend driver but still I miss those turbo pulls and cruising the curves of the road. I need her back the wife and I are planning on a trip to the Tennessee mountains for a fall vacation, so hurry up!
i've bought my 07 997.1TT, cobalt blue, tip about 18 months ago- Priced just over trade in value, couldn't pass up a local 1 owner, 19k miles, 2 yr CPO car with lots of CF. Wasn't sure i'd love the tip but took a chance. Love the car every time i'm in it & tip is just fine.
Sure PDK is light yrs better but then it's a different car, diff engine with the 997.2TT
What isn't mentioned here with the 997.1TT tip--when in manual mode & running flat out it will upshift automatically at redline even in manual mode. No need to shift manually with button- It's actually great to be in manual mode- get on it in 1st, hold on & concentrate on the road while it upshifts by itself to 2nd, then 3rd, etc. When in Auto mode, it's alway seems to be 1 or 2 gears too high, but when you floor it, it will jump from 4th or 5th to 2nd & take off strong. I usually drive in manual mode & keep it in gear i want (2nd or 3rd normally) & use buttons to shift- It's just fine .

Will it still auto up shift like that if the sport button is on?
A tip will run better drag passes. This is nothing new. From a roll, racing both cars, if you have software that allows brake boosting and no-lift-to-shift then the 6MT will hold boost on the shifts as well and that coupled with less weight, and less drivetrain losses makes up for any gain in shift speed from the TIP. I personally see no point in buying an excellent sports-car like an 911 and then getting a regular old auto transmission, but that's just my opinion.
I have to agree with "squat" and his responses above. The tip is very fast and all other things being equal should outperform the 6 spd. See my picture to the left and you will see what type of driving I do with the tip. I've also done plenty of 30-40-50 rolls and can assure you there will be very few cars that can compete.
There's two camps here. People saying "I love my tip!", and people giving reasons why the 6 speed is faster from a roll.
Follow emotion, or data... I'm glad you guys like your tiptronic transmissions, but in the situation the OP describes all other things being equal the tip will lose. Sorry
What ya want to know! It was hosted by slipstream it's roll racing down the front stretch at Pocono speedway !! Amazing! 60mph for I think over 1/4 mi.... They have 2 events a year there I guess..... Was $350 but was well worth it.... 10+ passes
