Calling all experienced builders
Calling all experienced builders
Greetings 6speed members this is my first post here and i am looking for a little insight on the 997.2 turbo. I have been building cars since I was a kid and every year or so I take on a new project to tinker with in my spare time. With half mile racing becoming so popular I decided to find a car that could be a contender for these events. My first obvious though was a gtr however I do not care to be 1 of 700 GTRs at every event so that is a no go for me. Despite the fact of the gallardo having a single disc clutch I strongly considered it since used TTGs are coming down in price but I get just as much enjoyment building a car as I do driving it so buying a built car is out of the question. Those decisions lead me to the 997.2 awd, factory turbo, great aero and the optional pdk. My only concern is I notice no one seems to be making big power "1000+" on the .2 and even some fairly recent builds have been done on the older .1. Is the .2 a weak platform or has no one felt like spending the extra money on custom parts when they are already available for the older style engine? My ultimate goal would be 1400ish awhp on my friends dynojet. I am more than capable of fabricating everything from basic brackets to the entire turbo set up and I have a CMM so making cad models to have custom parts made is not an issue. Thanks
No one has been able to overcome a few things:
1. Fuel system. DFI uses a high pressure system and no one has successfully developed a system to upgrade it sufficiently.
2. PDK. There have been no confirmed companies that have been able to build it up sufficiently to handle significant power (700+)
3. Motor. No one really knows the limits of the DFImotors at this point because of points 1 and 2 above.
In this case you are better off building a 997.1 if you want those power levels. Megion is high hp with a tiptronic automatic transmission and yumaverick is VERY high hp with a sequential if you want to see what is involved.
It has NOTHING to do with fab skills for dimple things like turbo setups etc. Many of us here are more than capable, it involves areas where not even the industry leaders can crack the code.

Your post is liable to start another long .1 vs .2 engine debate, so stand back and watch the sparks fly
Basically, the .1 has the race bred dry sump Mezger engine which can handle heavy mods, while the .2 has a consumer grade engine that doesn't lend itself to much modding. If you intend to build a high HP engine, the .1 is probably you best choice. the drawback here is that the .1 does not have PDK.

The ultimate solution would be to swap a PDK into an earlier Mezger powered car. I have searched high and low looking for someone that has done that but I haven't found anything.
If you were able to figure out a way to do that, you would have the ultimate setup, he'll I would go in with you on the development because frankly that is my dream car!
The problem is that the tiptronic transmission isn't a bad transmission and there are shops like ES motors that are building them very strong so there isn't really a desire for most to go to the PDK.
