So I got a message from my mechanic today. 1.5 qts of oil came out of the intercooler house and right side turbo has play in the shaft. What are my options at this point?

freddiemac is infamous around these parts
rebuild the turbo... It's rebuildable with any decent turbo shop that works on BorgWarner turbos. Your turbo oil seal is out.

Thanks freddiemac, I was unaware that the 997.2 VTG turbos could be rebuilt. Any idea of the cost of rebuilding vs say upgrading to something like the Champion 68mm turbos?

I went with a local vendor: http://www.diamonddiesel.com/

They rebuilt my EVT700 (I think they are 63mm) 997.1 turbos for around $1K or a little less each..

It's a good time to think of upgrades such as Champion or FVD, since you'll just get a new core.

It's caused by oil in the intake system or residual oil in cylinders after a hot run.
The former can be caused by overfill (more of an early turbo issue), or a bad turbo seal. The far more common and benign case is improper cool down after a hot run, leaving oil pooling in the cylinders of a flat six. Technically, modern water cooled turbos have a cool down cycle built in, but I've seen this scenario plenty. After a hot run I always let it idle for a minute or so.
Edit, just saw your turbo post. Lots of places can rebuild them, turbokraft does outstanding work, Chris Carroll is the man to talk to at TK.

Typical behavior, but also check oil level and make sure its not overfilled.

Thanks so much.
When you rebuild your turbo, they'd take it apart and replace the seals and bearings, etc, and put it back together after balancing it.

When you buy the upgraded turbochargers for 997 turbos, in theory, they had already taken a new OEM BW turbo and upgraded the compressor side with the upgraded compressor that flows more air (more air flow=more power). Or a vendor could've just take an used OEM core and rebuilt it with new seals and bearing, etc, then upgrade the compressor side. In this case, you get an upgraded turbo with the problems you're having already remedied.
