Rear Diff on its way out

Rear Diff on its way out
A few weeks ago, I noticed a whining noise around 2600-2800 rpm that would disappear around 3k and up.
Initially, I thought it was the belt since the tensioner, waterpump and rollers were changed a year ago.
After changing the belt, the whining sound is still there - changed the tranny fluid (4L of 75W90) .. yet still there.
My indi took it for a drive, and said he said its either the diff (90%) or the clutch release bearing.
The clutch did slip while doing a 3rd gear pull on sport mode while data logging.
I was told that the spider gear has a play against the side gears - generating the noise - but it is safe to drive.
What do you guys think? The whining bothers me. Is it as simple as slapping on a new diff or LSD? Or something more involved. Would appreciate your collective guidance.
