broken front drive shaft boot question

My 997 turbo's front drive shaft boot is broken and the black grease is everywhere around the caliper and my question is, not sure the dirt will get in but for sure the shaft will get more or less wear out and the debris will hold by the grease, so is that necessary to use brake cleaner to wash the grease out and put the new grease (which kind of grease?) but which grease is good or just leave everything alone just put the new boot on?

You need to fix the boot ASAP, I would recommend only driving it to the repair shop. Even if you grease it as soon as you drive it all the grease will come out. That along with some road grime you will seize your cv joint really quick. When that happens, it pulls on your front diff in ways it is not meant to and breaks it!

Yes sure will replace the boot but before install the new boots do we need to do the cleaning and re-grease the cv shaft?

Yea for sure you will need to clean them thoroughly and re-grease! Not sure what type of grease they use.

Generally the SOP is to remove the item, clean it thoroughly and inspect it for any damage. If the inspection finds nothing wrong to repack with grease fit a new boot and install.

Before cleaning though I suspect the tech would feel the grease and if he feels any grit in the grease just recommend replacement.

But you can and should speak to a professional tech and get his input.
