In my Boxster's oil level sensor the (partially open) tube also contains the wiring with a thermistor located at the very bottom of the tube which is how oil temperature is obtained.

However, that's a kind of hard item to get at so you might want to visit your local Porsche parts counter and ask about an oil temp sensor. The parts department guy (or gal) can bring up the parts drawing and show you where the thing is located to be sure in your car's engine it is where I suspect it is.

Rather than talking about Boxsters which have no relevance to your question or your car.... Here's a diagram. Highlighted part 38 is your temp sensor. Not sure what it's like to work back there.. From my understanding, the 997TT oil temperature sensor is a relatively common piece to fail and it can be intermittent- so it may work the next time you get in the car, may not.

Seattle, that sensor is a water temp one, oil temp sensor is the oil level sender, follow the oil filler neck its just behind it. Try checking for a loose connector and clearing the error code before changing it out. Happened to me once, I cleared the error with a durametric and never happened agaian

Good luck

#40 is the oil pressure sensor. Mine went bad last year. Oil pressure would be fine then hit zero. Very scary at the time. I had it replaced by a indy.

Porsche uses a very similar oil level sensor and oil temperature sensor for its engines. The level sensor needs to be immersed in the oil and that is as a good a place as any to have the oil temperature sensor. The oil level sensor reading may need to be "corrected" based on the oil temperature so having the level sensor and the oil temperature sensor very close together makes sense.

Here is a parts drawing of the M97.70 engine lubrication oil tank and item #15 is the oil level sender. It should have 4 connector pins. Two for the level sensor (a loop of bare wire that runs down the tube and back up again) and two for the temperature sensor (thermistor) which is also a loop of wire that runs down the tube and back up agains) with the thermistor at the bottom of the loop.

Checking the connection as suggested by TT.BRN is a good idea.
