Check engine Light

I have a 2011 997.2 TS and i had taken it to my mechanic a few times for the check engine light. He read the codes and all he can came back with is elevated emissions and that we must replace the gas cap. After we did the light took about two days to come back. The problem is that he doesn't see anything else nor any other codes come up.

I don't want to take it to the dealership because they want between 180 and 250 to diagnose it even though i have extended warranty on it.

I'm in southern California (Anaheim to be precise). I don't drive the car hard nor do i track it, i just take some weekend drives along PCH pacific Coast highway and such.

Does anyone know who can i bring the car to and can take my extended warranty aside from the dealership? Or someone who is willing to work on it and also work with the warranty Easy Care Car warranty.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

You have the wrong mechanic diagnosing your car. What exact codes are you getting?

Thank you. I don't have the codes he didn't show me he just told me that will take care of the issue. I guess at this point i just need someone to diagnose the issue.

I'll try to find a reasonable place. But if you recommend something i will greatly appreciate it.

Thank you.

Find someone locally who has a scanner or invest in one. This can pinpoint an area to focus on. The gas cap your mechanic mentioned maybe just one of them. At this point it could be O2 sensor or something else

Agree with the others above - get us the actual code and we can go from there.

The gas cap is usually the first/easiest place to start. I would also wipe down the gas cap seal as well as the filler area in the event there is some dirt preventing a perfect seal.

Other times that I've seen that come up would be if the tank was really low and it is especially warm outside...

Thats true if he thinks about the gas cap.

What about yr. cats? Maybe yr. MAF?

Bring it to the dealership. Self diagnostic can get very expensive althoug the gas cap is quite cheap. Be aware with CEL youre driving with reduced engine power.

The CEL is there for a reason. It can be something simple or something a lot more complex, so it is best to see what the actual code is. I am not insinuating your mechanic doesn't know what he is talking about, but if it were just the gas cap, this would be easy to diagnose, fix.
