996 turbo or 997S ? The Ultimate Dilemma !
Hmm, we could trade magazine test times all day long. Road and Track actually tested a 997C2s faster than a Turbo.

With regard to the TT's GT1 based engine etc vs the non turbo engines, if you want to learn more there's plenty of information available written about it.
My reasons for getting a 997S vs a turbo is I personanly perfer to buy new cars and did not want to spend over $120,000.00 at this time on a new car/TT. If I knew of a pristine one owner, late model, ultra low mileage 996TT with an extended warranty at the time of purschase it could have swayed me. Once you've owned a turbo its very difficult to go with the base cars, fortunatley for me my last car before the 07 997S was an 06 MB E55, which even though it was faster the 997S still felt quicker as the E55 was so smooth and comfy (but I could just never get over the 4 door thing).

But mechanically you simply can't compare a 997s to a 996 TT. GT3s and TTs are in a totally different league mechanically than regular 997s - the bottom line is that the GT3 and TT carry the real Porsche hardware / mechanicals. Anyone who says otherwise simply doesn't know what they're talking about.
BTW, I also have owned/own 911 Turbos (in fact I have a 997 Turbo on order) so you are not the only one who knows anything about them.
Are you saying that the "hardware/mechanicals" in my 997S are made by someone other than Porsche?
Never implied I was...

Oh and BTW R/T's last test of a 997 (a C4S) showed 0-60 4.1 QM 12.6 @110mph , much more in line with the norm.
Enjoy your new Turbo...

If they are the same price u have to factor in warranty. Does the turbo have an extended warranty, because (even though porsches are super reliable) once u need to fix things it gets expensive. I personally would rather have a brand new C2S because 1. I prefer rear wheel drive, 2. It's lighter, 3. In my opinion it looks better, 4. It's brand new (i love new car smell), 5. I hate the 996 interior
No, you go take the time and educate youself, I'm not about to spoon feed the likes of you.
You brought it up, not me. I already know I just wanted to see if you did.

and it's almost 150-200lbs heavier than a regular S

Don't drive the Turbo, you won't be able to forget the torque and the 997S will always feel lacking.
The 997 is magnificent but there's something to be said for having your shoulders pinned against the seat when your right foot is pinned to the floor.
I had a 996TT and switched to a CL55. I really lust after a 997 but I'm not about to lay down 125k for a Turbo and every time I accelerate the CL hard, it reminds me that I just won't be happy with something less than shocking levels of torque. Don't drive the Turbo.
Having said all of that, I have very, very few opportunities to enjoy the handling offered by the 911, so most of my pleasure comes from hard runs of 0 to whatever. That pre-disposes me to the Turbo.

Mricorp, where did you order your tt ?
Sounds good. Btwn the two I'd get the 996tt, however, the 997 s is a helluva a car, runs the 'ring nearly as fast as either the 996TT or a 996GT3.
Either way, can't go wrong!

Factor in the warranty in this decision as others have said. The only turbo's I'd ever be interested in are 993 or older.
As for what defines a 'real Porsche' many people have different definitions [ex. I hate post 993 turbos and would spring for the NA car even if they were the same price new]
Both would be fine daily drivers.
If you can stand the 996's styling, and are looking for easy mods and huge power gains, get the turbo.
In almost any other case the 997 would make sense.

I usually buy my cars from out of state. I have tried to buy on LI several times but I got the runaround by one dealer (I will leave them unnamed) when I was buying my C2S. I tried again this time with another dealer but I was told the soonest I would see the car is 12-15 months.
For me the C2s 997 would get the vote. The 996 TT is a great car but it is still hampered by the problems that model of porsche Had especially in comparison to the newer 997. Namely looks although tt was one of the more interesting looking 996s and interior. The 996s interior looks really dated when compared to the current 997.
Speed wise there is not a lot in it and lets face it if you are hitting the limits on the open road it is only a matter of time before you are behind bars or driving on that big race track in the skies...

I have been test driving 996's and 997's for this very reason, and I would agree with most all magazine articles and the other 997 owners. The 997 is a far superior car. Both ride, handling, every day use type of reasons. I would not hesitate to recommend the 997. I'm actually holding off my purchase, so I can get into a 997. I cannot stand the styling of a 996 nose and dash. The 997 is just a much better design.
