You hit the rev limiter and you have a level one over rev. No consequence but it is recorded for posterity. Is this what you are asking?

Yes - I am looking at a car and the DME shows one level 1 over rev for 54 ignitions. I want to be sure that it is not an issue for warranty purposes.

What if the revs were in stage 2 or 3? Are there limiters there too?

A level 2 overrev is mechanical. This is where you accidentally shift to third instead of fifth and the RPMs skyrocket. This type of overrev has real potential to damage your car, and I suggest you avoid it at all costs.

there's only 1 limiter. You will hit it just over 7200 rpm. The way you hurt the engine is to be going 130 in 4th gear and drop it into 3rd. The other way is to lug the engine - drive 10mph in 4th gear. Both of these things are bad. Taking the car to redline as you accelerate in each gear is called DRIVING a Porsche.

Interesting, in that case what is a level 3 over-rev? If you have 60 ignitions at Level 2 and a dozen or so at Level 3, and nothing in 4,5 or 6, what is the long term significance for the car?

Really? Blow your transmission? How many ignitions at Level 3 would be required for that kind of damage? A mere dozen? Hundreds?

And what does Level 4-6 mean?

I know someone that had 1 level 3 over rev and the transmission had to be replaced. I dont know if this is bull**** by the dealer but it is true. The car would not go into 2nd gear it had to go 1st to 3rd.

You don't know if it is BS by the dealer yet it's true? Am I missing something? I'm just trying to understand this and that sentence was contradictory. Thanks for explaining it though.

Also what is the difference between Level 1 or 2 and Type 1 and Type 2? Are these the same things?

Thats what the dealer said. I believe it to a extent but then again it could be wrong so thats why im going back and forth. If someone comes on here and says the dealer lied I could believe that as well.
