Newby considering 997 C4S purchase - questions

How can I rest assured other than making sure the VIN on the door matches the window sticker, any quick 'giveaways' other than the wider body which would be touggh to gauge in isolation? When I opened the engine compartment, I remember the sticker stated 'S', not '4S'. Since it is the same 3.8ltr engine, I imagine that label is the same regardless if it is rwd or awd, no? Can someone confirm for me? Really weird though, generally CarFax has their facts straight...

It;s probably an error . The 4S is not as common as the S and it wasn;t launched until model year 2006.
If you have it inspected at a porsche dealership the first thing they will look at is the VIN and something adds up wrong they would let you know .

Speaking of production numbers, is there a formal registry (I know the RS4 guys are good in keeping such, including drill downs by color and option codes!). How many total 997s produced for say 2006, and what is the split among C, CS, C4, and C4S?

VIN Decoder at Renntech.org. You may have to register and pay but it does the job. I just went through this with CarFax. They don't know everything.

You can also go into any dealership for a ppi and they have a system which can reprint the original invoice. If it has model number 430, that is a C4S.

Got to the bottom of it...
Thank you for contacting CARFAX.
CARFAX is only able to decode the standard equipment as the VIN decode pattern indicates. In this case, the standard equipment is Rear Wheel Drive and the optional equipment is All Wheel Drive. The manufacturer does not distinguish the equipment within the VIN and so CARFAX cannot distinguish the difference on the Report.

Your question of whether it's transferrable is the same as mine . I don't know and I won't guess.
The original factory warranty covers "bumper to bumper" . The way it was informally explained to me was that after the factory warranty expires the "Porsche warrranty" kicks in . It was also expressed that within the fine print there are specifics which are not covered in both.

As far as transferability, it is, regardless of number of future sales, as the warranty applies to the vehicle rather than the owner . Here is the link with the full specifcs of the extended warranty program, the doc is too big to attach given the forum contraints.

The "limited" aspect provides a warranty loophole . That's the only snag along with the car being two model years old and priced very close to a new car .
Let's just kick around these approximate discounted figures for fun :
The two year old 9Kmi car at 69K
A new car at 89K
The 20K is a strech which goes a long way UNLESS you knew the previous owner and full car history . You can get closer with inspections but this car is such a valuable thing and my feeling is one has to be certain that it's all in order.
