Thumbs down Crappy Cranking Sound

Anyone else think the way the NA 997S cranks is kinda crappy? I've owned many P-cars over the years and this is the first time I've thought this...it just does not have a very refined cranking sound (and its kinds slow as well), I don't know if it's the starter motor or what but it sound like an old jalopy. I just think for $100k Porsche could have done better in this area. I had thought perhaps it was just my car but this is my second 997S and a colleague's sounds just as bad. I can recall the 997 turbo cars cranking, sounding much nicer and more refined. Maybe on the new DFI cars this will be improved.

Your cranking an engine with almost 12:1 compression ratio. What do you expect it to sound like. The 997TT has a lower compression ratio so it would crank faster, giving you that "more refined" sound when cranked.

Yeah I've heard this before which pacified me for awhile but the compression ratio for a Ferrari F430, MBE63 and the new M3-5-6 are all over 11 to 1 and they sure crank/sound a hell of alot better than my car. My former 993's (which have an 11.3 to 1 compression ratio) also did not sound so crappy when cranking. I've also got to beleive with today's technology it does not have to be an issue.

What year is your car? I see EPH94 has an 2006. I just traded mine and also thought it was a little slow cranking. I picked up my new 08 and it cranks much faster. It may be that the battery is getting a little weaker with age if thats the case. If i would have kept mine I would have probobly put in a new one in at the end of this summer. I also bought my car at the end of 2006 when the 07's were hitting the lots, so if you bought yours earlier in the model year this may be even more so.

My current 997S is an 07 (Dec production) with about 10,000 miles...I recently checked the battery fluid levels and they were fine but maybe it's weak. As I mentioned at the start of the thread one of my colleagues has a 07C4S (that he purchased in sept of last year) and his car sounds about the same.

That was a good one and a great analogy.

No really it does, sitting in the car reminds me of the cockpit, and the turning over of the engine (sound and vibration) for a brief moment reminds of his plane. I know this is a personal feeling, but I am sure there are some pilots out there that know what I mean.
