You don't need awd in the rain or the snow - it's redundant when you have PSM.

I suppose the Porsche school in Finland simply aren't a "confident" bunch.

The Turbo simply brings the AWD system to the next performance level . "Frail egos" usually come in the form of ad hominem deflections rather than addressing the topic .

If performance is not a primary objective, then any car which meets the needs of the driver ought to be the focus of a purchase . Porsche offers several models to accomodate a driving style or the specific needs of a wide variety of drivers who appreciate this model series .

There is no right or wrong choice for the person who buys a car he enjoys.

The 997 s (2s and 4s) are both wide body cars. A few people have responded to your original post by saying that they prefer the look of the 4s (wide body) and that would sway their decision.
I prefer the feel and handling characteristics of the 2. I live in Toronto and I drive a 996 C2 cab all year round without issue. I only mention this because others have chimed in that a 2 will be poor in the rain or snow.
I'm shopping for a 997 and will definitely go for a C2s.

Good luck with your search.

Cheers,
Stan

It's not about being wussie at all.

When people move to the 911 from a more conventional sports car they find the car not that easy to drive fast on the track. It takes some getting used to realize the car has a lot more front end grip than you first think it has. So the tendency is to be less committed which is when the car understeers which makes new drivers to the 911 experience more nervous. The awd version pulls you through the corner, "on rails" so feels safer and is easier for a new to 911 driver to feel more confident.

Once you've done some track days and know what the car is capable of and have more confidence in it and your own abilities, the rwd car is more satisfying. Hence track day junkies go from a 997/S/4/4S straight for the GT3, and miss out the TT which is a very fast GT, but not as rewarding as the GT3. Or if you got more money and b*lls you go for the GT2 which his faster than the TT and more rewarding because it's rwd.

Only the 4/4S/GT3RS/TT/GT2 are wide body. Everything else, including the 2S is narrow body.

If you're "confident" they will put you into a Boxster or a Cayman. There's a good reason for not putting people in rwd cars in Camp 4 if they're not used to driving cars in the snow. People bend them! As it is you should see how many front spoilers get replaced during the season.

Feels safer...more confident...and its proven to be faster with equal drivers. Oh.. and better in any condition. They are both great, for the street it does not matter. The 4S does feel more like a GT because because it is underpowered.

The track days I attend the 2's brake later, carry more speed through the corner and accelerate faster out of the corner because they carry less weight and understeer less. But each to his own.

Le chef...I'm surprised you own a Cab, with its severely compromised chassis!

I live in the rain capital of North America, the C2S is just fine. When I was first looking at them, I was asked the question, am I going to drive it in the snow? I replied no! So the 2S is all I needed.

i had 996 c4s and now exchange to 997 carrera s

ok the diffrent is 997 faster than the 3.6L c4s
c4s has wider rear end by 1 inche...more wide more awesome!
awd better handling than 2 wd of course in any terain in my opinion

the 3.6 L engine is more suitable for biturbo uograde
the 3.8 L is not suitable for biturbo upgrade

i would say c4s more fun!

Horses for courses

It does fine for street, and the other car (a rwd coupe of course) does fine for the track, so no compromise, just horses for courses.

You guys are splitting hairs. The difference between an S and a 4S is about 120lbs or less than 1 average passenger. Porsche does not claim a difference in 0-60 between the two. Even if there is tiny difference it would be erased by such things as driver only vs driver and a passenger or if your fuel tank is almost empty vs full tank of gas.... I've driven them back to back and couldn't notice a difference in acceleration, there is a tiny bit of a difference in handling but not worth talking about at the typical street driving level. I used to own a GT3 and yes, I could feel the difference between the GT3 and the C4S I currently own in terms of acceleration and "seat of the pants" feel. What the C4S does allow me to do is drive more aggressively knowing that I can push my luck much further with all wheel drive and PSM vs rear and no PSM on the GT3. Call me a wuss but I am driving faster and having more fun in the C4S.

Well stated. It all comes down to personal preference. There is no right and wrong here. Let's move on to something else.
