Blown Engine on my 997S - How Easy to Replace with X-51?
Disaster!
The engine on my 2005 997S let go on me last Friday! There's a massive knock from the bottom end - my independent thinks it's crankshaft / rod bearings. Bloody annoying when the car's only done 30,000 miles, had oil changes every 6000 and never seen full throttle or high rpms until the oil's hot.
I'm just waiting for confirmation from my independent, but have resigned myself to finding the cost of a replacement engine (and it will at least make the cost of repairing the annoying squeak from my clutch a little cheaper)! In the meantime, I thought I'd research the options open to me.
First thought is if it is possible to replace my engine with a crated X-51 engine from Porsche? I assume I'd additionally need to buy the X-51 airbox and ancillaries and a pair of X-51 exhaust manifolds to give me the full X-51 spec? (I can use the pair of Tubis I have rather than the PSE cans). Is doing this feasible? And where could we get an X-51 map from to re-program my DME?
Another alternative is to go X-51 with a full AWE system. I have a pair of AWE cats and a pair of AWE mufflers so would just need to add a pair of their headers. Anyone got any experience of the full AWE with X-51? Todd, do you have any dyno results for this combo?
Anyone got any other ideas as to how I might turn an expensive failure into a much faster car?
Regards

Ian,
Horrible News, is it not covered by warranty any more?
As for the X51, don't forget that you need a third radiator as well. Also I have seen a few X51 engines on ebay, only
$20000 US.

that was for an x51 crate engine
Franbacher Loles had a 3.8 for 7100 bucks for sale brand new in the crate.

Sorry about your issues but you can usually get X51 performance out of a std motor with some tuning and other small bolt ons.

He's in the UK so not sure if Porsche NA or Suncoast will be much help.

I do but we usually don't share the same methods of thought . Regardless , I do empathize with your situation.
We do share one common goal in that you want to correct the "disaster" and come out winning I just don't speculate we would take the same path .
This is what i would do. I would cut my loss right here . You can go through all the effort and aggravation but all of it can be hedged right now .
Your regional dealerships like to sell cars . They also have the ability to get that engine replaced a lot better than you do .
Take off the mods , place the car on a flat bed truck and start calling dealerships trading in that car "as is" . It will not be total loss . A new car would make this bad situation change instantly .

Is there no option to repair these motors? It has to be cheaper than replacing them.
My vote goes for a bore job to 3.8, build the internals, add a supercharger, and run it at 10psi

Its a S motor allready a 3.8
Ok. I overlooked what model it was.
What about repairing this motor? It has to be cheaper to repair than replace it. Seems there are all sorts of engine internal and transmission ads popping up in pcar mags for the water cooled models.
