You have to drive it.

New York is a tough market . So is Southern Ca . Buy a car in those regions and priced into the car is the dealership's rent which is higher than other parts of the country .

Another aspect is where the car lived its last two years . Was it garaged? Was it driven over NY roads ? Or was it from somewhere else ? And where ? Did it face a tornado ? So many questions would run through my head with a used car .

It's a beautiful car . Miles are an issue which probably kept it on a lot for awhile . It's psychological that people like low mileage P cars . It's even worse with Ferrari or Lambo . Trade in a 22K F car and watch its price go Timberrrrrrr!!!!!

You have to drive it . You owe nothing to anyone except yourself when it comes to car shopping so my suggestion is to check out the car before you commit to buying .

Me driving it beforehand will be kind of tough since I just started my new job yesterday- would probably be bad form to take a day off in the first week!

That being said, you made me think about it and I'll see if I can't have my friend who lives in the area drive it. He test drove the other cars I looked at w/ me, since I was hesitant to drive them hard (I'm relatively new to stick whereas he's been a motorhead for quite a while).

I looked on auto trader just for amusement and there really is a shortage of these cars . My area has a lot of C2 cars but not many S cars . I found a C4S which looks beautiful but its 52 miles from my area asking 68K with 17K miles (Champion wheels, looks nice black/tan) . Not crazy about tan interior though .

Your car seems right about in line.

Someone has to drive your car . It should be you with your friend because if he goes and tells you its great --it puts him on the spot if it isn't .

Haven't seen the car in person and don't think I'll be able to get any testing/ppi because this is effectively a wholesale transaction. I will make sure to ask if there's been any bodywork/accidents though, thanks for the reminder.
No worries. Never offended.

Fastlane - not sure I could get much lower mileage for the price, given that this is an '06, not an '05. I think someone mentioned they saw an '05 997 C2S go for $61k w/ ~10k miles, which I thought was a stellar deal. So if a model year is roughly equivalent to 10k miles in terms of resale value, it's a wash.

I think superficially the mileage is fine, because after I drive it for 2-3 years, having 35k miles won't get me much more money at resale than 25k miles. The only big worry on the mileage is what it implies about how hard the car's been driven.

I'll talk to Parin about how wholesale transactions work, but if it's anything like what I saw when I attended an ADESA auction, it's very much an "as is" kind of process.

Here are more pics! Sounds like people don't think the headlight fix will cost a bunch.

Pix look good and clear concern. Make sure u drive it as yar states

Seems like a decent deal to me- Car looks very nice. Are those white gauges or light silver? I think the headlight replacement will be expensive, I can't see that being a cheap part.
All in all if anything doesn't work on the car you have full warranty.

Take it to the Porsche dealer for a PPI (pre-purchase inspection) too much can go wrong over 20k miles not to have it thoroughly checked out.

And the steering wheel looks funky, the front trunk is really dirty and the car needs a thorough detail.

My advice, Negotiate seller to pay for a PPI at the dealer, new headlight and new tires before you buy.

I agree, get a PPI or pass. Reason being, you mention peace of mind. Not getting a PPI on a used Porsche is like having unprotected sex with a girl you just met, how do you know where she's been? LOL

Seriously though, if you can't get a PPI $250 +/- then pass, there are lots of 997S in the same price range with same specs that you can easily get a PPI on and KNOW you aren't going to get an STD from later. LOL

I have not driven the car, just found out about it today (and it's in NY).
I struggle with the story that its been sitting around for a few months... if they tried to sell it from their lot, they would have detailed it out, no?

From the picture, the center piece of the steering wheel looks very scuffed / worn. It could be the picture, or it could be from work done on the car.

Best of luck with this - sight unseen / wholesale without an inspection would make me very uncomfortable. Its a $60k+ gamble...

The center of the steering wheel does look a bit strange. Dirty maybe, but I'd make sure the air bag never deployed.

hmm... Those sound like words of experience!

I agree with the PPI- Additionally, cars almost always look better in pics than in person. Cameras don't seem to pick up the worn stuff very well, photographer can touch things up, apply interior spray before photographing, etc.

thanks for all the advice guys!

for better or worse, I bought the car w/o PPI. I had my friend (who frankly knows more about cars than I do and is pretty experienced buying used cars) check it out and take it on a long test drive. there were some issues, but they'll be taken care of under warranty.

for anyone else doing their search who wants a price point, I bought it for $61k + documentation + tax.

given the cheapest Porsche dealer '06 C2S <30k miles is $69k (and that's w/o CPO), I figured I could afford a few $k in headlight replacement, new tires, and other reconditioning and still be happy that I got the right color w/ the options I wanted.
