I use a simple plastic oil drain container and then take it over to a Pep Boys, Kragen Auto or the local gas station and pour into their recycle drum.

The oil drain container holds about 12 quarts so it good for a single oil change. I use one like this . . . . http://www.acehardware.com/product/i...VsBT.2hXe2.oWQ

I bought mine from Automotion.Com during a sale they were having for 10 bucks.

Granted it's a small hassle but how many stories have you heard about oil overfills and exorbitant prices for a simple job. Not only do you save money but you get the satisfaction and confidence that the job is done right.

in have something close to that.m problem is, its not leak safe and i need to walk egg shells transporting it to an autozone, nevermind that i sometimes spill is the garage.

i either need to get a leak proof solution or seriously take precautions to keep everything clean. so...how many quarts does the car take?

8.75 Quarts for the 997 S, remember 4 parts. Crush Ring, Rubber Seal for the filter housing, filter, and 9 quarts for the car using only 8.75.

The oil fill technique I use is to put in 8 quarts initially (8 qts. w/ filter change; if no filter change add just 7 quarts) get the car on a level surface, power it up and then check the oil level via the dashboard readout. Then add the needed amount to bring the bar (dashboard readout) to an acceptable level. See the following procedure.

OIL LEVEL PROCEDURE
Porsche wants you to check your oil after you fill up with gas.
The car should be hot and now sitting for 5 minutes after shut off, your oil level should show the correct amount for thermal expansion.
The 3 segment area between the arrows is 1.26 quarts or .42 per segment.

If the bottom segment is on and not flashing, put in a quart and that should be good, never over fill the oil level as that can then get into the intake system and the contaminate the catalytic converters or MAF sensors.

Both of my dealer oil changes were both $$$ AND overfills. Last one was done by an ASE place run by 2 ex-Porsche techs; Autozone retail price for the 8.25 qts, which was perfect and they gave me the remainder in the 9th bottle, $90 for labor but this included checking a lot more + a hell of a nice job cleaning the wheels when it was on the rack!

Then there is something very seriously wrong with the way you make toast, my friend. ;-)

When I make toast, I don't need to wash my hands really well afterwards, nor wear special clothes to crawl around on the floor. Nor do I need to take the breadcrumbs in a special box to a distant location to be properly disposed of. It takes me 3 minutes to make toast.

I think $180 is about the average "deal" price at an indy or dealer. Parts alone are about $100 so the rest is whatever the place wants to bump for labor. Some places will charge 30 mins labor instead of an hour, but typically it seems to be a full hour labor charge. Make sure if you go to an Indy they reset the indicator. I've gotten good price and service from Lucent Motors (Los Angeles) in the past.

I think my last Oil Change was $175 (with PCA Discount) at the dealer and $190 at the Indie. Also, if you're still under warranty they'll probe your car up and down to try and find something they can bill back to PCNA under a warranty claim repair.

As an indy shop owner, I've always thought of Oil changes as good faith for my customers... I quite literally don't make anything on them. $129+tax covers my Motul, crush seals and o-rings, OE filter and disposal. Call it an even $150 and I replace the air filter as well. I also have a PIWIS to reset your service intervals... Speaking from the dark side, anything under $200 and you're really getting a deal considering labor and overhead the big boys need to cover.

As a side note, I love when someone picks up a sub $10K Boxster these days and loses it when they get their invoice for $129 for an oil change and accuses me of gouging them simply because they own a Porsche.
