Questions for the knowledgeable
Questions for the knowledgeable
Hello to everyone from a new guy. Thinking of taking the plunge into the Porsche family.
I'm interested in a Targa C4s. It will be pre-owned for the obvious value reasons. Options ideally would be Seal/Quartz/Meteor, 6MT, scp, full leather black/tan, heated seats, thicker multi function wheel, deviating carpet, maybe nav, crests in addaptive seats. Maybe some leather tidbits and a matt black center console.
I an interested in a wing but would want it to be somewhat subdued. I guess the aerokit retrofit would be pricey so that will have to be looked at more closely.
I know that the Targa is rarer and that could mean I wait a while but might also correlate with a lower price due to lower demand.
Wife is insistent that 911 be awd so that it can be driven year round with appropriate snows which are sometimes ugly.
Questions:
1-Can good all seasons get me through lighter snows? (Denver's weather is unpredicatable but this winter is very mild) I can drive her RX330 when the snows get ugly since she works from home. Or is another wheelset with snows necessary?
2-Would like to get a CPO for comfort and piece of mid but if I found an original owner selling their Targa, could that get CPO'd?
3-DME scan and the PPI should help ensure that my sample will be good? Could an independent shop perform both of these?
4-Any Littleton 6SO'ers here that would take me for a spin in their Targa? Local dealer's selection is quite limited as would be expected.
Thanks for the input. I found the previous poststhat I read (111 pages going back to 4/6/08) very helpful. I like to research quite thoroughly prior the jumping in.
Regards

I'll comment on some statements in blue.

Dealerships know that it takes a very particular buyer to sell a Targa . Most want coupe vs cab so many pass up the Targa for that reason . Plus MSRP costs near a Turbo which further cream the Targa in resale . ALL the leverage is in YOUR favor as the buyer .
Wife is insistent that 911 be awd so that it can be driven year round with appropriate snows which are sometimes ugly.
Your wife is totallycorrect for a Denver car .

I don't know . I live in florida . It looks like this here .

It depends on the owner and also depends on whether or not you feel that you can trust the CPO status . I think CPO is a must unless you are buying a car from someone you know because it places some used car accountability on an autorized Porsche dealership.
3-DME scan and the PPI should help ensure that my sample will be good? Could an independent shop perform both of these?
Yes .
Good luck.

Thanks for the information. I'll have to drive the Targa to help finalize the decision but its nice to know that the potential for a reasonable purchase price is there.
I think the wife and I would be happy but I'm kind of a creak nut so I do want to know that its quiet.
I think that good all seasons would take of my winter needs for most of the weather and when needed I can drive my wife's vehicle.
I hope others will chime in with their thoughts even if not directly Targa related.
Thanks again.

The AWD will help in the snow but only for the light snow - the car is too low to navigate any heavy snowfall...plus you won't want to drive it anyway because of all the sand/dirt they put on the roads.
There are very good Porsche approved snow tires available and even chains if desired. The car will go great in the snow.
The new Porsche Pre-owned is damn near identical to the new car warranty, the old one wasn't. It is NOT possible to purchase a car and have it CPO'd, you'd need to get a after market warranty. I'd recommend CPO over anything else, PPI or what not.
If I'm taking you in context correctly, and you say you're picky about interior noises, I'll be honest and warn you that Targas have always been noisey cars, you will get creeks, chirps, and rattles. Some can be repaired some, some can only be subdued others not so much. With a new CPO'd car you can probably get those taken car of.
Good luck and let us know how it turns out.
