I just received my November issue of Car and Driver and they Road test the Carrera S. They got a 0-60 time of 4.1 seconds and a 0-100 time of 10.2, 12.6@112 mph 1/4 mile.

Now I really like my Carrera S and I know that C&D is really aggressive when doing their road test but outside of testing the car on a down hill, I don't know how they can possibly get a 0-60 time of 4.1 seconds. Even by the seat of the pants, the S doesn't feel that fast.

Yeah, I'm guessing the controversy will run riot on that review.

 

That 1/4 mile time is utterly fantastic. If these cars are trapping at 112 (And usually, C&D publishes low times), I must say that Porsche either geared and engineered these cars perfectly or they're underrated.

 

Dont go by stats by these magazines, Porsche's numbers are more conservative but more realistic.

 

My 997S doesn't feel like it could do 0-60 in 4.1 sec. Maybe downhill in a tail wind. (Or towed behind a CGT!)

 

autocar which is pretty reliable got a 0-60 of 4.6 a 0-100 of 10.8 aand 1/4 mile in 13 secs at 111mph.Standing Km in 23.4 at 143 mph.

but that car will never be the same. I certainly won't by trying to duplicate it either. I like to drag runs once in a while but it is just for legal speeding fun.

 

 

Numbers like this remind me of the '89 964 C4 coupe that was tested by R&T at 4.5 seconds at it's press intro and astounded many 911 owners - but... no one else got better than 4.9-5.3 in all the subsequent tests of 964 over it's 5 year production run .
Didn't they also recently get 3.6 secs for a stock SL 600 with everyone else at low to mid 4s ?

Notice the 0-150 time though of 26 + seconds ... the Turbo would be more than qtr mile ahead by then, X50/GT2s ever further .

 

How do they test the vehicles?

 

C&D has crazy numbers all the time. They drop then off a cliff and see when they hit the ground.

I was the first one to harp that the 997 Carrera S needed more horsepower, but either Porsche is sending hopped up test cars to the journalist, or the horses under the Porsche bonnet are a little bigger, or maybe they are fudging those #'s a bit as to not hurt GT3 sales. Maybe fattening the torque curve helped (and the fact that the engine is in the back on top of the drive wheels), but it literally dropped .7 sec. off the 996's 1/4 mi. time from 30 hp ? Maybe different test conditions ? But I thought the Corvette was going to crush the new 911's in straightline speed.

 

I Also read the Car & Driver article last night and i was going to start a thread of my own. I currently drive and E55 which replaced an 02 Z06 (2 kids now) but I am back in the market for a third(sports) car. I am considering a used turbo, 997s, or the new Z06 when it arrives. I find the numbers very hard to believe but if there is any truth to it I think the 997S will be my new addition!! I live close to Raceway park in Englishtown, NJ and i have yet to get the E55 down there. Anybody in the area with a 997s who feels like testing those numbers??

 

I don't get mine until December, but come spring I would be interested in a few runs. I am 5 minutes from Raceway. However I am more concerned with duplicating that trap speed. To pull a 12.6 in th 1/4, one would need to launch perfectly, and I am not that skilled. I also don't want to beat on the car. I say 13 flat would be a reasonable goal. I will be posting my impressions once I get the car.
