Can a modded car be CPO'd?

I'm looking a used 997 C2S at a porsche dealer, and the car is modified. It has the Champion F77 performance package, which includes Tubi exhaust and headers, carbon fiber intake and engine tune. I believe the mods were done by the dealer The salesman says it can be CPO'd, but I always thought mod'd cars could not be CPO'd per Porsche USA.

Anybody know the answer?

If they're saying it can be CPO'ed I would take that with a grain of salt. If you go for it, just make sure you have everything down in writing before buying, all the mods listed individually on the CPO paperwork, etc. At the end of the day, if they sell it to you CPO, the Porsche has to honor that. Let the dealership deal with the consequences.

According to my local Porsche and Mercedes dealerships, MODIFIED cars are NOT CPO capable.

I'm guessing that they are going to use a third party extended warranty company. Technically, only PCNA can give CPO, and they don't like aftermarket parts.

The first line on the Porsche PrePurchase Inspection paperwork for CPO asks: Are there any aftermarket parts on this vehicle?

But if a dealership is claiming that they can do it (give an extended warranty), and you can get it in writing, and they are willing to cover everything bumper to bumper for an extended amount of miles, then I'd say it's safe. An extended warranty is an extended warranty, and if the dealer accepts it, whether it's CPO or third party extended warranty, then it should be good to go.

My $.02: assuming they are referring to CPO, I would imagine it might be "safe" on two conditions: 1) if you always go to that particular dealer for service, and deal with the same service people - presumably, they will "overlook" these mods when doing (warranty) work on the car.. another dealer may not, for fear of not being reimbursed by PCNA, 2) you aren't worried about something like a catastrophic engine failure. If your engine goes boom for any reason, PCNA are going to want the readouts and exact details of the car before they reimburse anything.

My $.02 are the exception, not the rule. Be weary of a salesman claiming modded cars can be CPO'ed. I discussed something like that with my dad in the semi-recent past. I commented that a particular 996TT had some work by Gemballa, 600+ HP, tuned suspension, etc. and the seller listed it as CPO. I suggested this seemed quite iffy to me, and my dad, who is a salesman at a local dealer, pretty much said I was dead on: the CPO would be DOA.

Enough acronyms for one day?

Justin

Agreed. In my situation, I always go to the same service department dealership. They've offered to extend my warranty on my car, and I have a few goodies (which they actually installed!).

there is a modded 911 at my local dealership and they said that it could be CPO'd but there would be a exclusion of the modded parts (ie suspension, etc)

Thanks for the info, guys. Spoke to the salesman again this morning, and he said that he double-checked with the used car manager, and yes the car can be cpo'd. Said the mods were allowed because they were installed by their dealer when the car was new, so they know the history of the car.

This is not a third party warranty, and the dealer is on the east coast, and I am on the west coast, so I'll never be going to this dealer again.

Although the salesman started playing games with me already since he knows I'm very interested in this car. He said he misquoted the cpo fee of $2500 when we spoke the other day... it's going to be $4500 now. Typical...

Drive by your local dealership and speak to their service department manager. Ask him to run the VIN of the car you want to buy and see if he would have any issues honoring any warranty work.

If he's nice and wants your business, plus he says okay to working on the car, get it.

If he's your typical service manager, doesn't really care about your future business with them nor does he care about the car because they did not sell it, pass on it.

The CPO is only as good as the dealership that will honor it.
