964 was good. I have had a few 993 C2S's and aesthetically they are amazing. Now driving a 997 C2S and thats on another level. There are certain days I miss shutting the doors on the 993.

In their day, I loved the styling of my 964 and 993, but never really warmed up to my 996. There was nothing about that car that I liked. My 997 looks just fine.

996 put me off so much that I forgot all about wanting a 911 (other than maybe a nice 993 ;-) ) - completely. I just happened to notice while rummaging around through consumer reports, car shopping, that the 997 had the lights fixed - that was the pivotal moment that landed me in the 997. I know, the 997 has been around a while - that's how completely forgotten I am talking about.

996 was like "New Coke" of 911s for me. Just couldn't do it. Although I had some friends who bought them and enjoyed them.

I still think that the 996 MKII (turbo headlamp) was ahead of his time. The exterior is an evolution (design wise) of the 997

i think the 996's are still good looking cars. not that i think exterior mods are required to make the 996 looks good, but with many cars, add some mods to it and it completely changes the look. yes, usually for the better. heh* i've seen it done time and time again. so i won't bash on why porsche made the 996 body the way they did. besides, i have one and i think it's a great car! =)

I've always wanted a 911, but after the 996 came out...I realized it would have to be an older Porsche because I didn't like the direction the "new" ones were headed. 993 was the car for me. Then, when the time was right, I started looking and noticed that the 997 went back to the 993 for design cues inside and out. Well, that did it. I could have a new Porsche with the old look. I was sold. If it weren't for the 997, I'd be in a 993. Headlights, foglights, tucked in waste, 911 enterior...sign me up.

I know, same here. I completely forgot about porsche, and really cars in general, after the 996 came out. Sort of killed my hope in cars.

But one day back around 2005 ...

I like 993s and 997s. I have a 996 but I still don't understand the hate for the 996's that 993 and 997 owners have. I will go now, to my beloved 996 section of the forums! LOL!

I love my 997, but in response to all the comments about how "bad" the 996 looks, maybe you should see this Top Gear review of the 997. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYWk-nat1ok

As to the the 997 , I was curious why Porsche would design a vehicle with the front end of a VW bug and the tail of a Volvo.

one little detail that irks me on the 997: the lines on the rear fender where bumper cover meets the car.
996 they are horizontal, and 997 they are angled... the angle just doesn't sit right for some reason.
the horizontal line seemed more... something... elegant? or just flowed nicer?

did they change it just to distance from the 996?
