Accelerating .. the rev limiter will kick in and starve fuel to the engine or sound like the car is spitting. The rev limiter will not allow you to blow the engine.

DOWN SHIFTING, there is no rev limiter, and this is how you money shift and blow engines.

Im pretty sure the DME only counts downshifts, as you cant really accelerate beyond the rev limiter, the computer won't let you.

Not sure I agree here. When valves "float", they are not fully opening and closing because the revs are too high for them to fully return to their positions. The result is the valves can contact the pistons. That is about the worst thing that could happen. Soon after that a rod goes out of the block and your engine is blown. Or a valve goes through a piston.

I'm not positive either, but I believe if you go full gas, hit redline, shift and stay on the gas and "speed shift", you can go over the limiter simply by the momentum of the engine carrying itself past redline.

DME doesn't know if the over rev came from bumping up against the rev limiter (type 1) or a mechanical over-rev from a missed downshift. Rev limiter just keeps you from doing damage on the upshifts but will still record in the DME - I don't think the rev limiter is "smart" enough to stop revs right at the exact rpm limit.
