Tire Size Question 997 C2S
Dave, thanks for the response. I'm an idiot, however, as I was referring to the Stockton's pics. and should have directed my question to him...as it was his pic that got me started.
Stockton,
Is it just me, or do the sidewalls of the rear tires make the tire look like it's streched over the rim....as if the rear tires should be wider? Shouldn't the sidewalls be straight up/down...no angle as is shown by the front? Nice car by the way
.

If you are referring to the 295's on an 11" wide wheel then it is stretched to the limit. Porsche did this to give the sidewall the maximum support and to give the tire a maximum footprint. If you notice most manafacturers who produce a 295 tire recommend a 11" wheel as the max in width for these tires. The 305's look perfect...I put 305's on my 997S and although it doesn't look really that much wider it does seem to fit the rim a little better. Now you move to a 12" wide rim and the 305's will be stretched even more than the 295's were with an 11" wide rim.

That's more of an effect of the PS2 sidewall on that 305. They have a BIG lip to protect the rim. The tire is the 305 on a 19 X 11.5 rim. Very similar to what a 295 on an 11" would look like. In the rear 1/4 view, this lip makes the tire look stretched. A 315 would give a more vertical sidewall.
Whew, the universe is once again back in order. I read your post and, respecting that you have track experience, I took it as the truth. But I couldn't figure out how it could be true. More tread in the rear, sticking better, less oversteer.
Moreover, I'm coming up on rear replacements and would like the look of 305's. But I don't want more understeer. Hmmm...

A 305 will introduce VERY little extra understeer versus 295. Different tires will have far more impact on handling than changing one size up in the rear. Also, remember that GT3 uses 305/30-19 on 11" rear.
If you like the look, get it!
