997.2 Engine Oil Pressure

The oil pressure on the new 997.2 engines seems to be a bit odd compared to the old engine.

The new engines pressure seems to be lower and the gauge needle moves erratically and strangely at times.

Does the new engine have some kind of oil pressure demand system which is electronically controlled?

It fluctuates a lot and below 3k rpm's it is about 2 to 3 on the gauge. Does not seem to go up to 4 or 5 like on your 997.1.

Yes.

From Porsche's website:

The purpose of integrated dry-sump lubrication is to guarantee a reliable oil supply while reducing engine temperatures, even in sportily driven cars.

The oil reservoir is located inside the engine, making an external tank unnecessary. Four oil pumps remove the oil from the cylinder heads directly into the oil sump. A fifth pump in the oil sump directly supplies the lubricating points in the engine.

To prevent foaming, the oil is channelled through cylinders known as swirlpots. In this way, optimum lubrication is guaranteed at all times and the oil pressure is always maintained at the necessary level in order to ensure, for example, that hydraulic valve clearance compensation remains fully functional – a condition that is crucial to the power and emission characteristics of the engine.

To reduce power losses and increase efficiency, an electronically controlled oil pump supplies the lubricating points inside the engine as and when required. This means that the oil pump does not work so hard when there is less demand for lubrication. The benefits of an on-demand oil supply system are optimum efficiency, increased fuel efficiency and lower exhaust emissions.

Single-jet spray nozzles cool the piston crowns with oil from the main lubrication circuit – another detailed solution that helps to reduce the thermal load on the engine.

Thanks for the info!

I knew something was really different, the oil pressure gauge really moves around a lot when compared to the 997.1 engine. Really amazing to watch!

Are you looking at 997.2 's? I thought you just got a 997.1 .
If you are "tempted by the fruit of another" you may just beat my five day Civic Si short term ownership experience.

Larry...

You are correct and very perceptive, the black car is gone!

I gave it back to Braman, I hated the transmission.

They were very understanding and nice about it and gave me a great deal on an 09 S Coupe PDK. Love the car, WOW! The difference is amazing.

Car is White with black interior.

I am a little disappointed that I could not beat your five day Civic ownership!

Oil pressure depends on what the oil temp is and the rpms...as an example when the oil temp is at 225 and the engine is at idle, the pressure for 997.1's should be between 1.0 bar and 1.5 bar. The higher the oil temp the lower the pressure and visa versa...

Bought an 07 CPO S Tip with 3200 miles on it 2 weeks ago, a really beautiful car and it was loaded with options.

The problem was that I personally could not stand the Tip, I don't mean to offend anyone but I really hated the transmission.

So I got in touch with the dealer and worked out a return and purchased a new 09 S with PDK.

I am one happy camper now!
