Sounds like you have been here before. My wife is from Fujisawa which is near Yokohama. I use to come to Japan twice a year but now just in the summers. My wife and kids have already been here for a month. I cant express the joy I have when I hear my 2 boys (5&7) speak Japanese, it actually brings me to tears as I swell up with pride. I love those crazy Harajuku girls. I have been to the Meiji temple before as well as Ginza for sushi. You are right about the subways during rush hour....when there is 30k people waiting at an intersection to cross to the subway station. I clinged to my wife like a newborn fearing if I let go I would never find my way back. I actually ride the subways by myself. When I arrive to Japan I take the Narita Express to Ofuna and then the Odakyu line to Shonandai and walk to their house. Although this time they picked me up in Ofuna. It was so great to see my wife and kids. It was nice and peaceful for about the first week then after that I really felt weird not having my wife and kids near me. My wife went ahead and did it...she really did turn me into a family man. I never saw myself like this. I thought I was going to be career military and be just a fun loving bachelor, 12 years of marriage and 2 boys and I am in hook line and sinker.I cant post up pics as this computer is archaic, but at least she has broadband as just 2 years ago it was still on a 33k modem.Dave
Its amazing how kids can effortlessly pick up languages as they go...and I've found that no amount of Rosetta Stone software or Continuing Education classes here on our side of the pond will ever beat a total immersion in the country itself. Good on you for encouraging your kids to discover the wonders of their mom's culture.
We stayed in a vacation rental apartment 5 minutes away from the Nishi-Ogikubo station. Their rates were very reasonable and I would recommend it for a young family that wants to experience how a typical Japanese family might live as opposed to the usual 5-star hotel experience. Not sure if we are allowed to post a link of their website here in the forum, but if anyone is interested, just PM me.
We had a great time in Tokyo and would not mind going back to discover more of Japan. Enjoy the rest of your stay.
Cheers,
Slim

I always wanted to stay in Tokyo and I really am going to consider it next time we come. What amazes me as well is the girls here and the incredibly short skirts they wear here. I must have been to Japan now for at least 15 times now and it doesn't change...to my benefit of course. Now only if I can get my wife to wear such skirts...
I spent many happy business/pleasure trips to Japan before I retired. We used to stay in Shinjuku and then decided after many trips and countless hours of train rides to stay in Omiya and then Iwatsuki which was much closer to our business (Fuji Xerox). I really enjoyed the culture and the politeness of the general population. The transportation system (subways, trains & taxis) is 'world class'. I recall the shock of being in Tokyo Station or for that matter any other large railway station at the end of a work day. The mass of people they move is unbelievable. What also amazed me about Japan's train or subway passengers is that they have an uncanny knick of awakening from a deep sleep just before their exit stop. Must be a talent acquired as a result of all the hours spent on trains. The taxis are the cleanest in the world; love the white dollies on the headrest.
I never attempted to drive in Tokyo proper. Too many cars and pedestrians to have to deal with. First off you'd never find a parking space or have to pay mucho yen to park in one of their lots.
Enjoy your family vacation and the wonderful Japanese culture.

It is amazing how many people they move. I see you live in Hermosa..I live in Playa. I miss the weather where we live. It is rainy 90deg F. with 98% humidity...nothing like living near the beach

Heard that you just had an earthquake off the Izu Islands at M7.1 which you must have felt in Tokyo. A rather common event as we also felt a tremor when we were there...this one today though caused the stoppage of trains and a pro-baseball game.
Hope all is well with you and your family. Regards,

Didn't even feel it guys...then again I was pretty smashed last night as we went to Yakiniku (Japanese BBQ).
I have been in now 4 earthquakes in Japan, a couple of them big but never any damage that I have seen.
