Thump on downshift (tiptronic)
Thump on downshift (tiptronic)
Sometimes when I'm coming to a stop after mildly spirited driving (80 mph on a 55mph road) I hear a thump when the tip is shifting down to 3rd or 2nd. Not sure exactly as it doesn't do it every time and I'm usually not looking at the gear indicator when it happens as I'm not expecting it.
I had a similar problem on an '05 Jeep Grand Cherokee (last American car I ever owned) and it turned out to be a faulty torque converter - a relatively common problem for Jeep - and I got my money back under the Lemon law.
Any thoughts on what this thump on the downshift might be? It sounds / feels like there's a battery in the back that is sliding forward a few inches and hitting a bulkhead. That's not happening of course, but that's how I'd describe the problem. I'm still under warranty for 2 more years . . .

I had a thump back in the 1990's with a 993 which drove me nuts for about a year . It ended up being a lock nut bolt placed behind my seat when a tech changed a flat tire .
My point is that one's first thought is engine or transmission but it could be anything .. making it too hard to guess.
