A road trip is a great way to break in the car - as long as you stay off the interstates and keep to the back roads as you mentioned. I bought my car from a dealer in Ohio and drove it back to L.I. taking Rte. 6 most of the way. Great US Hwy. road with great scenery and allowed me to use all gears/rpm's.

philcr2800 is infamous around these parts
I followed the manual's guidance to avoid short trip (10 miles or less) during break-in to allow the oil to heat up properly, avoided long idle run (traffic jam), warmed up properly the engine each day (but not idle) and finally did the first oil change a bit early (10k miles) to remove inevitable metal particle that every piece of mechanic would rub off.
I don't know to what extend it is linked to my break-in but I have one of very few cars with virtually no oil consumption and done 21.77 m/g since I drove the car out of the dealer (never have reset the computer).

I would drive it like you stole it, if, and only if, the engine is at operating temp.
Only the US manual seems to have a 'break in' agenda. Not so in ROW.

Ok, maybe not like you stole it, but drive it on par with your daily ritual. If that includes a track day, so be it. Bumper to bumper on the 405N? Enjoy it all the same.

When you think for a second what these engines are made of, various metals, rubber parts etc. non of them are going to be effected by a break in period at the temps they are going to see.
