Bertil Roos..."Drive your own"

Was able to attend the Bertil Roos "Drive Your Own" event yesterday at the NJ Motorsports Park Thunderbolt track.

The event is divided into two groups...novice and advanced. There were about 15 cars in novice and 12 in advanced.

I went to the novice class so I could get in car instruction.

The day started with a 1 1/2 hour class and then we had three track sessions. Each lasting an hour. For the track sessions the students were assigned to an instructor...about 2-3 students per instructor.

In the first track session the instructor showed the line, stopping at each corner, in one of bertil roos' malibus and then each student drove the track a few laps in the malibu.

In the second session the instructor spent 10 minutes in each students car as the other two followed and then there was 30 minutes of open track time. With passing allowed in the long straight. You could request the instructor for more time if you wished.

The third track session was a full hour of track time. With or w/o the instructor as requested.

The long track time was great as it was a new experience for me driving so long in a open track event. Most DE's for beginners are about 20-30 minutes.

With the long track time there are plenty of chances to try new lines thru each corners.

In addition we ran the second chicane, which was new to me and allot of fun to go thru at fast speeds.

There were a number of nice cars in the group, including an C63 AMG, new M5, new 335XI, porsche turbo, boxster, cayman, mustang a few MB's and my base 997.

The students ranged from first timers to those with a few track days to one or two seasoned guys who wanted to learn the NJMP Thunderbolt track.

While more pricy than a normal DE; for those wishing to get started in High Performance Driving its a good place to start.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. If ever they come out to Southern Cali, I'll consider looking into them.
