But its nearly impossible for the guy to get a direct hit on my headlight from a long distance, no plate on mine. No matter what its still better than nothing.

Have to disagree...the laser disperses more than you think...if they aim at your license plate from 500-1000 yards away, the beam will be 3-5 feet wide by the time it hits your car....they cannot aim it at just your plate or front mid bumper unless they are really close to you but by then you would both be able to see each other.

If they dont get a read on you via shifters, they will assume they didnt catch the right reflection point...they wouldnt bother going after you unless you were going extremely fast as they are eye balling it.

I have seen video where they laser the front license plate from few hundreds of yrds away and not at the shifters but they cannot get a lock on car due to dispersion pattern.

Most states use laser now rather than radar(although some could argue this depending on where you live)...I have seen the list before and laser list is much longer...and there are about 5-6 states where laser jamming is illegal but its not in most states...so for anv person, laser shifters seem to be the most reliable way of not being detected.

ok, someone PM'd me and wanted to see my setup...I have the passport SRX with Z3 shifters...it is abit old technology now and I wouldnt put this on my car if I had to do it all over again since there are better options now...personally I would pay the extra and get Blinder or Laser Interceptor but I suppose its not too bad since I bought car used and it was already installed on it....here are some pics...last pic is linked as I wanted to cross out rear plate.[ATTACH][ATTACH][ATTACH]Name: IMG_1199.JPG

very important question:

Does the actual detector need line of sight or not?

Mine is also installed behind the front bumper and I have heard that this is not the ideal location. On the other hand, I don't like the looks of it being exposed in the front air dam?

My 9500ci works excellent when detecting cops on the street, on the highway I have not had it go off and seen an actual CHP officer yet... *thinking about adding a V1, unfortunately...

Escort told me this was a good location since the laser functionality of the detector is in the shifters which are mount in the line of sight. So far the unit has performed well. I dont miss my V1.

Qi45 as detector only

ZC,

What do you think of the Qi45 as a detector only? Minnesota illegal for laser "shifters". Did I understand your sensor is behind the bumper? Thanks

It wasnt bad. A lot of false alarms. If I did it again I would jump up to the 9500ci. That one remembers where the false alarms are. But at $2000 installed I would just buy a 9500xi and hardwire it next to the mirror. Save the coin...

Qi45

zs, thanks for the info. We have a number of crazy laws in Minnesota that make a choice difficult to be legal. One is that you cannot hang anything off a windshield! So no suction mounted detectors, or GPS or anything. Otherwise I would go directly to the 9500. The other being that laser jammers are also illegal so I cannot have a laser shifter either. I think Minnesota and one other state maybe Washington State have that law. That is what drove me to the Qi45. But I have a 997 which means the sensor will have to be low in the air dam, and my understanding is that a detector will not work as well if not high. So my overall question is whether I should have a radar detector at all, since I cannot jam laser, and not too LEOs are using radar. Anyone got any thoughts? Abort Qi45?

I installed the Qi45 in my C2S. It's great, due to its stealth mounting and auto-on with ignition. Easy to install too. I did not install the laser shifters, but can add later if I want.

I especially like the auto-mute function.

Thanks for your information. I had also been looking at a K40 RL360 but 2 to 3 times as expensive with laser shifters that were not detachable like the Qi45. Also interested in seeing if anything new pops up as I understand the patent on the two way antenna on the Valentine 1 has or is about to expire. Meanwhile, I just set the cruise control to the speed limit.

I will be installing the Qi45 with LI jammers. The LI aresuppose to be more effective than the escort shifters. The 9500ci over shoots my needs.

Please let us know what you think after you've got a chance to try them out. I'm moving back to installing the Qi45 because of being able to add or subtract the Laser portion as a plug in while in different states. Illegal in Minnesota.
