Oil level warning @ 1500 miles!!?!?

WTF. Low engine oil level. Warning light just came on!!! Only did 1500 miles from brand spanking new. Also only started pushing engine (only to 5500 rpm) from 1200 miles. Is this normal?

I think its pretty normal for a DFi car -- especially if driven in hot/humid/city conditions.

Normal, unfortunately. Burns a bit early on. I bought some Mobil 1 OW-40 and topped off and we were smooth sailing again. Keep some on hand. Had to do that for the E63 AMG as well. Come to think of it, the M3 burned some oil also.

Oil use is not DFI specific. Some boxer engines use oil and others do not. I know several DFI engines who use no oil.

Ours too, Adias. Probably depends on the phase of the moon when yours was borne. A minor nuisance as long as it doesn't indicate a real problem. I owned a car once that had to have the radiator refilled every fifteen miles. Now that was a problem.

As others have mentioned, a lot depends on the climate you are driving in and your driving style (short trips versus long, etc.). But the 997.2 break-in period is not 1200 (like it was with the e46 m3) but 2000 miles. Not sure if this has anything to do with your oil consumption.

And a factor specific to DFI engines is that these engines come virgin from the factory and were not hot-tested. Hot test runs on virgin engines is not a good thing.

I have about 9k miles on my 997.2 S PDK and it burns 1 qt / 1000 miles. I do drive it in sport or sport plus often and shift at 6k RPM (once its warmed up).

seems right especially for a virgin motor. not specific to the p car world but audi says my a4 can burn 1qt every 1000 miles and be within the allowable consumption. the car did that for the first 15000km then stopped all together. Same deal on my old s4 with the v8. 20000km then the engine woke up power wise and stopped using oil as well.

Does anyone know what viscosity they use when they fill it at the factory? Should I stick with that viscosity or change to different one suited to the area? I'm in New Jersey and store the car for the winter. What viscosity should I get?

Cant say i'd be happy with that . Industry standard is 1 litre per 1000kms but i wouldnt be happy with that either on a car like this.

If you havent overly nursed it and have avoided all unecessary idling or warm up time and, havent been running the engine at constant rpm on the freeway then it should bed in nice and not use this qty of oil IMO.
