My calipers are the ugly black that fade to grey.
They're being painted now.
And I removed the pads without removing the caliper. Just like the big reds on my buddies 993 c4s except mine has a pin driven through it.

I hope the comment your are reacting to was a joke, because changing brake pads for a Carrera is the same as changing pads on a Carrera S. And for that matter the same as changing pads on a Boxster or Boxster S. 
Part numbers differ from the various models, is all.
This site is still the best overall resource for changing brake pads on the 996-997/986-987's in my opinion.
