Maybe we will try CA instead...DME thoughts
not everyone is lucky as u..
and i am not stating all 05s (CPOed or not) are bad.
the future risk vs the current cost doesn't justify the purchase, IMO.
hope ur 05 doesn't give u problems any time soon.. but then again, u r the car expert...

The DME isn't tragic, but it's tarnished. Many will not touch a car with any time in the 4 range. Amazing, but relatively speaking, 50k is a high mileage Porsche. Not to say it won't go 100k, but that is the truth. That car had better be cheap, like $40k. Even then, maintenence and potential issues won't necessarily make the car a bargain. And if you buy it sight unseen from across the country, you take even more risk.
I just took a look at the car - it is very clean for a 50,000 mile car. As far as the DME goes, it's your call - do keep in mind that it was a very brief incident 600 hours ago, and PCNA is willing to warrantee the car for another 2 years / 50K miles. If it has the options you want and you could get it at the "right" price, I say go for it. Let me know if I can be of any more help.
My opinion on over rev cars is that I see as much reason to buy the car as it would be to go on a date with someone who has AIDS. There's just too many other cars without these issues. It's one thing if you fell in love with the car and quite another to have full knowlege and still dive in.
In my opinion .. buying a car knowing about a pre exisiting issue is a form of active participation in your own unhappiness. In fact by paying for the car you are even funding your own misery. Even if the car doesn't break .. you want to live with doubts?
Not me. No way. I'd pass.

The over rev is a recorded fact . Each person who view that fact interprets it in his own manner and my way would be to simply pass it by.
Life is indeed a matter of choices - we each must make our own. I don't see (from what I have deduced from your posts) that you would have any interest in a 5 year old C2S with 50K miles for under 50K $. Considering that this seems to be what our friend Gloves is looking for, do you think that this car is not a good candidate? Remember, his situation, not yours. I constantly find your opinions informed and interesting.

1) Will the money he saves going into the car only serve as a smokescreen for a potentially larger expense down the road ?
2) will he always have doubts knowing that his car bears the scarlet letter of the higher level over rev underneath that clean exterior ?
These two questions would send me into either :
a) a different car
b) spending more money up front to come out of the gate with a little more reasurrance .
I don't know how he will view his choices . everyone is different . I would wish him well either way.
"1) Will the money he saves going into the car only serve as a smokescreen for a potentially larger expense down the road ? "
Keep in mind - the car is CPO - Porsche will cover any significant expenses for the next 2 years / 50,000 miles. Without that, my opinion might be different. With that, I feel that his risk is nill. Thoughts?

2) To answer your question -- I do agree that it is better to buy a certified car with doubts than one from an independent lot (like the other car he looked at) .. but even in that scenario I am still splitting hairs on measuring the doubt.
To me "cost' is time spent in the shop followed by resale expense when he goes to sell the car and it has no more warranty , more miles, and potentially added history . If he gets 2 years and 10 percent of his time is spent in the shop followed by no one wanting to buy the car when he's done .. how is this a bargain ? To me it sounds more like an invitaton to stess .
Why not just buy a Cayman s with 1/3 of those miles and 2 years newer ?
No matter how beautiful a car may be one can fall in love with his fantasy of what the car would be like . That fantasy can turn into reality when he's sitting in service facing stress and expense .. no car is worth this to me.
I still would pass.
EDIT - stupid cars.com doesnt seem to want to link right. Let me see what I can do.
I found the car again and changed the link in the first post. Here it is again as well.
LINK NO WORKY
I put about 6k worth of miles onto a car each year. I do not have a lot of money by any means. I played my car buying cards right and have the funds to get an 05/06 either S or non-S as long as it is about 46K (not to far off from this car so I should be able to get there). The miles are a bit higher than I would like and the over-rev does say something about the way the car was driven but as stated it was 600 hours ago and still nothing has happened. I know that things can go wrong at any time so it could be another 1000 hours before that over-rev shows its head.
my biggest problem right now is non-S envy. I am looking at both and I can get a newer fewer miles non-S but the down on power isnt what I want. I think it might be the smarter way to go to get a better car for a better price.

Personally, the DME scan doesn't bother me at all. I am sure mine looks worse, and I know that my engine is fine. A lot of 997's have sat in the garage and don't have any miles or over revs, and they will cause you a lot more problems then a car that has been driven the way it was built. The other indicator, is this car had the one range 5 over rev when the hours were at half of what it has now, so obviously this one is has run for a while this day. If you are really concerned find out what kind of third party warranty you can get to cover major components.
